I would say Landstar is a stepping stone away from having your own authority. Personally, if you have never been an independent contractor then I would start with a company like Schneider (SNI) to get your feet wet, and then graduate up to Landstar....before making the leap to full authority unless you have alot of cash in bank and can weather the initial 6-12 months getting acclimated. Every Landstar driver I have spoken to (and think DougA will agree) that with Landstar the first 6-12 months can be tough working off the load board until you develop some broker contacts and develop your running base or circle so you known brokers in your running area to assist in keeping you moving.

You are correct, not a lot of good on the load board anymore.I would hate to have payments of any substance and rely on it to make a living. When I first started with Landstar,it was still mostly direct shipments. My home agent in Baltimore would keep me as busy as I wanted, with very good revenue, all direct shipments, mostly Govt. stuff. Now 90% of Landstars freight is brokered, just the way the industry is anymore,I don't like it,but if you want to continue on you have to accept it.I'm pretty much retired and really don't have to work, just having a hard time getting away from trucking.
I also have an old contract with Landstar,I get 76% of 98%.A little better than most, benefit of being an old fart with Landstar.

Landstar.....LS gets the first 2%...then the contractor gets his/her % off the 98%. A driver told me the other night they never have gotten a good explanation of this 2%. But LS keeps 100% of that 2%. In addition to the contractor getting 65 - 76% depending on their setup....Landstar still has to pay the broker and their overhead. Personally, if I was going to re-think about leaving SNI down the road again I would probably just get my own authority and cut LS % out altogether....but you need some cash in the bank, really check out the brokers you are dealing with and understand you got to collect that money too. And that is why I am happy with SNI....alot less headaches and less overhead on my part. I only pay SNI $31.75 each week for plates and permits as a fixed cost plus fuel and IFTA. But when DougA started out years ago....Landstar was the bomb, and I have never spoken to an unhappy Landstar contractor. Many say they don't like the nit picky fees, but money is good, especially in the specialized freight.

It was explained years ago as an insurance surcharge. Two percent off the top instead of whacking it off somewhere else.Thats what was told to us fwiw. All Landstar trucks new hire now are not on factored revenue any more, just paid a straight percentage I believe. When we were Teamster owner operators,I was with PIE Allstates, and Consolidated Freightways, and TIME DC,we were paid a two check system, driver and truck and trailer check, but those companys also took 2% off the top, again, factored revenue. Was to pay our health and welfare with the union.

Hey GAP and DFO, what can you tell me about SNI's tanker fleet? I hauled fuel in ND and am bored with anything less than liquid. I miss propane the most.

he best thing to do is read the following threads. The first one was started by NightGunner. It's his journey as a SNI Bulk contractor. SPOILER ALERT: NightGunner is no longer with SNI Bulk.

The 2nd one was started by Firespock. It's his journey as a SNI Bulk company driver. SPOILER ALERT: he is no longer with SNI Bulk.

You can also dig through the Schneider sub-forum and look for a large thread started by ethos. He was a SNI Bulk trainer but he is another is is no longer with SNI Bulk.
    I sense a theme happening.
