I'm not a new driver, been driving a 20k small flatbed for years and because of the weight need a physical but not a CDL. I went to a new dr. since mine retired and he gave me a 3 month card and said I had to see an eye dr. Well,I couldn't get clearance from the eye dr. and just told the dr. at the followup it wasn't happening. he suggested a vision waiver but couldn't do anything further. so he gave me back my whole form and said keep trying. I finally got the vision cleared by a different doc,and there was a walk in dot place right there so I got it all done. But now I'm wondering with the registry what happens with that open ended one? Is it reported as a fail?

I don't believe it is reported, and even if it was, you now have a current Medical Form on file that states that you passed, so I wouldn't worry about it.

there is no requirement that a doctor must file or report a failed physical,,some states require a failed or refused drug test to be reported, there are many doctors or persons registered with the DOTs national registry that are approved to give DOT physicals that are not doing physicals correctly,,when the new registry was set up a 68 page physical guide was established,,there are many of the persons doing physicals that go way too far such as requiring sleep studies etc . If your company does not require you to go to a specific clinic or doctor just go "doctor shopping" until one passes you.
I had a bad shoulder from an auto accident 20 years ago,,My orthopedic surgeon passed me on my physical when I went back to work and even took a day trip with me to observe my driving ability. I passed all my physicals for the next 18 years but when I applied to a job with a company recently their chiropractor quack failed me because of my bad shoulder. I told him the regs only required me to be able to firmly grip a steering wheel. I went to real doctor and he passed me.Too many of those doing physicals don't really know what they are doing.

I thought the whole deal with the registry was to prevent doctor shopping,so if one doctor fails you but then another passes you, isn't that just evidence that you looked elsewhere? Would it raise any flags? I called the last dr and just asked if it was filed and they said yes,as a fail. So while I do have a valid card now from someone else,is this going to cause a problem? Has anyone ever had dot follow up on a questionable physical or discrepancies?

I think it would only raise a red flag with some one if you had several fails and then a pass. Did you get a 2 year medical card when you passed? I wouldn't worry. 2 physicals isn't "shopping". Its "getting a second opinion 'cause the the first doc was a quack"!

All the registry did was to get doctors or whom ever was doing physicals to register and certify that they read, understand and comply with DOT physical regs,,there was no training requirements or any thing else,If you look at who can do physicals EMTs nurses just about anyone except hair stylist.

I never heard of this, must be a state thing because I was just dealing with another DOT physical issue with mine and the lady at our local SoS (DMV) asked if I was driving something under 26k so I could give up my cdl and not deal with physicals at all.

Sounds like your local lady shouldn't be giving advice.

The last company I was with primarily drove smaller dump body fords (F-450. F-550, F-750). DOT did not require a physical (I have mine anyways because i do hold a Class-A) but our insurance company did. Similar situation for a friend of mine when he drove a truck for Stop and Shop, he had to have a DOT physical for company insurance. Not all rules and regs are set by DOT some are company policy or insurance company requirements.
