I bought a new 96 pete with a 14,600 lb. rated front axle, just 1 box. My new 2000 pete was rated at 18,000 lbs, & it had a small hyd ram that was working the right side. They called this "dual Assist" My 2006 was rated 18,000- 20,000 & it had 2 boxes. All 3 trucks had the same axle (eaton FE-941 I think) . Spring & tires & steering made the difference in the rating , as far as I could tell. I put 18K capacity tires on the 96 & ran 17-18K on it on a regular basis without issues. But this was Paccar, not sure what the others do...

To even better protect those edges from chipping, we use 3" angle iron under our chains. We carry 3' long pieces and it goes under all the chains.

That's a good idea. We were the last three trucks loaded the other evening, so even getting those cheapo plastic ones was a fight out of the plant crew. Finally got our beams off late this afternoon, and heading back towards the plant tomorrow for a Wednesday load appt
