I'm looking at a truck that has a 3406E Reman in it, it's in a '99 W900. The engine serial # is 4AS00915. I was hoping some of you Cat savvy guys could tell me how to get a little more info on this engine, HP, torque, etc. been lurking on this forum for quite a while and just want to say how much I appreciate all the knowledge and information available here!

that serial # looks like a cat reman # any cat shop can tell ya what you need to know.
-
Yup, call your cat dealer. I have a 4AS00144 reman engine in one of my trucks that I just overhauled. Is there a tag on the valve covers? The 4AS is just a reman number, there should be a second serial number on the tag that you use for parts/service. In my case it was a 5EK83000.
-
I'll check for the other tag. I called several Cat dealers and they couldn't tell me anything from the 4AS number.
-
The fun with reman engines is they grind the number off the block also. Where did you get the serial number from? ECM reading? If there is no tag on the valve covers, then good luck.
-
The guy that had it gave me the number, not sure where he got it from. I'll see the truck in the next week or two, so I'll do some checking on it.

Looking at CATs record there was no detail available for that REMAN serial number.
-
The tag on the valve cover also has 5EK83000. I can also see where the number on the block was ground off.
-
I want to say if memory serves me correctly Cat changed something mid series on the 5EK Motors. I was looking for a shop service manual for mine and they split them from 5EK-00001 UP and a serial number I don't remember but I want to say it was in the 70 or 80 thousand range.
If I had to guess, I'd say that motor 5EK-83000 is the engine that they build remans to the OE spec.
