Yes. I went to a school locally and paid to get my CDL myself. I was interested in Roehl until my recruiter sent me an email to look over with a "LONGEVITY BONUS" package to read over. It states the topic, that I drive 75,000 miles or pay back $3,100.

I am torn. I don't mind paying back something that I am given if I decide not to stay, but if I am unhappy I don't want to be obligated to pay back that amount of money.
I understand that training cost and the company has to be cautious because there are those who will train and leave but for other drivers who really want to pick a company for the long haul it's a hard decision.

    Anyone have any advice?

Realistically you are looking at a 7-8 month commitment and the veterans would reccomend that you would stick it out a year anyway with your first company and move on if you are not happy with where are you are at. The best of luck to you. You could do a lot worse than Roehl.

    Thank you!

I am deciding between Roehl and Schneider.
Schneider does not have the contract but Roehl pays more during the training and per mile starting off.
I like a lot of things about Roehl, such as they are paying more now, and their home time, but as I started reading all of the emails, there is a lot to think about. The 75,000 mile contract. They also make you pay $228 dollars ($10.00 per month) for a kingpen lock which you get back in full if it's in good condition when/if you leave, and they charge $1.00 per week for an e-z pass. Is this normal?
The good is their home time, pay, and I do not want to do home time in my city all of the time and they allow this. Schneider would like for you to come back home when you are off.

I know that it is ultimately my decision but what do you think?

I am with TransAm and we are furnished those things without having to pay back. Ez Pass, Prepass, kingpin lock, abloy lock. Trucks are furnished with fridges, inverters, are automatics, APUs. If you consider Trans Am go company don't go lease. There is tuition reimbursement going on I think too. Been there 11 months. Starting pay is 30 cpm. Not a bad place to start out either.

TransAm I think makes you take your hometime at your home. Roehl sounds good to me. I had considered them at one time, I really preferred automatics which is why I didnt go with Roehl. I think not having to deal with shifting while learning to turn and back is much easier than dealing with a clutch andvstick. But you may be more advanced than I was coming out ofschool. Hope this helps.

Femalehaul, look at post 97 last paragraph. If they ask you to leave the program, you owe them nothing. If you quit, thats where you owe. I think thats fair enough. Again, its a 6-8 month commitment. If you can, stick it out a year. Its unique but not unfair. If it bothers you, try somewhere else. Many companies have no such stipulations. They pay beginners low to move their freight so the company assumes the risks involved with training newbies.

    Thanks a lot!

I think I may just start with Schneider. Their training is good and once I get my experience then my options are wide open. I've been evaluating everyone's post, and I think that I would rather take a little less pay to begin with than to be stuck in a contract.

That at is the sole reason that I chose to pay for CDL training myself!!

I'm curious. What's the thinking behind the $1 charge for an EzPass?

EzPass is a huge convenience; it's combined with the PrePass function that lets you bypass many/most weigh stations (both are in the same box mounted at the bottom center of the windshield).

You have the option (as far as I know, anyway) of having Roehl turn off the EzPass/PrePass and not having the $1 a week deducted from your pay (the box will still be there on your windshield; they just disable it). But again, I believe it's a pittance to pay for the benefit gained.
