Wow, great comments guys, I really appreciate the feedback. Here is what I heard:

    • Cons
      • Another piece of equipment that can fail
      • Potentially too difficult to operate, too much technology
      • Not common in road cars yet
      • Potential driver distraction, could spam driver from the carrier
      • Could lead to driver fatigue from eliminating head bob
      • Too costly
    • Pros
      • Useful information
      • Could be useful in limited sight scenarios
      • Good experience with them in personal cars

I can see the cost and the potential for driver distraction being a problem, but if implemented correctly both of those should be mitigated. After all they are being implemented in passenger cars where I would think those concerns are even bigger.

Isn't there information you currently use that you have to look down for that would be better up in the line of sight? I know you wouldn't want everything all the time but it's got to be a little nerve-wracking taking eyes off the road for any reason since the stakes are so high in big rigs. I know I get nervous doing it in my car which weighs slightly under 6,000lbs.

Unfortunately the "proffesional driver" or in the case I mentioned (super trucker) would be able to see further in inclement weather. So they would get on the throttle harder. The problem is that these super truckers dont take into consideration is that not all of the rest of the world is moving at their new speed. Some where further up ahead there are drivers that may be doing 20 mph and suddenly do a lane change. Well that super trucker that is now doing 70-80 in a blinding sees that traffic has merged into their lane and now he is there for the ride as his truck plows into another truck or worse a minivan filled with school kids.

No, this isnt good. Drivers are not weighing all the reasons of why we are supposed to drive slower in poor conditions. As to HUD not being in use at all? I googled "what cars have the HUD". The response came back was that it was on the models that were a electronic car that didnt have reaview mirrors.

So you decided somehow a HUD would eventually be used for x-ray vision in inclement weather then came up with an argument why they shouldn't be used? Wow, good stuff huh?

As far as you googling "what cars have hud". Only electronic cars without rear view mirrors? What cars don't come with rear view mirrors?

Chevrolet offers HUD on the Camaro, I bought one, it had a rear view mirror.

Yeah I am also confused by the HUD only on electric cars without mirrors comment. I was curious so I looked up a couple things...First a list of cars I could easily find that offer a HUD (apparently there are 38 different cars that offer them now according to cars.com):

    • Audi A5
    • Audi A6
    • BMW 3/4 series
    • BMW 5/6 series
    • BMW X5/X6
    • Buick LaCrosse
    • Chevrolet Corvette
    • Chevrolet Camaro
    • GMC Acadia
    • Lexus RX
    • Lexus HS
    • Mazda3
    • Mercedes C Class
    • Mercedes S Class
    • Mini Cooper
    • Toyota Prius

That made me wonder if maybe the truck manufacturers were thinking about it and at least Paccar is:

My observation was based on videos for cadillac describing the merrits of using their HUD in inclement weather. I didnt know my verracity had to be challenged for posting here.

So instead of looking at the road we are looking at a HUD?
Not basing what we do by what we can actually see in front of us, but by what a little display shows us?
Those displays are not in real time, you know. They have a time lag.

    I don't think I'll be doing that.

    I appologize lovesthedrive!

I thought we were discussing HUD in its current form. Which is nothing more than a display that keeps you from having to look down at the speedometer and nav while driving. Didn't realize you were speaking on behalf of future technology that is in R&D stage already.

Im not sure what you seen as far as what Cadillac is working on? ... but I would love to check it out if you have a link.

the system is called ON GUARD and yes it has "Active Braking" "Applies up to 50% of the vehicle’s braking power".....!!!

if you have ever had a truck with the old vorad system you know how you are just driving down the road with NOTHING around you and it would beep because of a overpass, bird, or something in the wind blowing across the road...?

with the new OnGuard system if it "thinks" something is there it will hit the brakes "up to 50%" and nothing you can do about it....... all our newer company trucks have it and the drivers I've talked to HATE IT
