how to pay drivers

Uuuhh, what were we talking about again? I forgot already....

 

1 - Most people aren't smart and/or motivated enough to use your fuel bonus system.
Also, there is some subjectivity with getting tickets. What if driver beats ticket or gets it reduced to non-moving violation?
In the end, they would blame management for not attaining bonuses.

2 - Want safer roads? I'd like to see the statistics on these devices. I speculate you could get safer roads with technology: automatic transmissions, speed limiter, cameras (with in-cab monitor for lane changing and backing), exterior distance sensors, electronic logs, daytime running lights, etc. These electronics are getting cheaper by the day. Many will soon be standard equipment like anti lock brakes.


Airplanes ####pits have an instrument called an artificial horizon. In its simplest form, it shows if your wings are level, if the airplane is pointed up or down.

Imagine if your truck had a screen with a graphic of your truck and distances to white/yellow lines, distances to vehicles ahead and behind. A readout could show how quickly you are gaining on the car ahead of you and how quickly someone is gaining on you. Truck radar.

Imagine if your truck had a backup camera. Imagine if your truck had a right side camera that came on when you turned on the right turn signal. Same for left side.

 

Whatever process you use, keep it simple. Straight percentage with quarterly or annual bonuses for good driving, getting paperwork in on time, clean inspections, etc.

 

I pay 40% of the line haul and 100% accessorial fees collected - after any costs that is out of the ordinary.

I pay for fuel, maintenance and so on which comes out of the 60%.

These guys make money for me and we are happy.

I do not dispatch them, I do not interfere in their selection of freight and they just tell me when they are going to take more than a day off so I know.

I found it is harder to find people to trust and do a good job than to deal with monkeying around with pay.
