Drive how your comfortable, but theirs a reason most people float, it's MUCH easier on you and sometimes the truck. Once your in your truck for a while you'll learn it and how it wants to be shifted. Up shifting is easier without the clutch at first but you'll get them both down eventually.

I love when people say stuff like "end of story" like it's been in some double blind study and scientifically proven or something LOL! It's making more work of something than need be, if somebody doesn't know their truck well enough to float without hurting it I don't know what to say. I'll enjoy my working knee later in life thank you!

Or clutch in general for that, I was raised in a family of mechanics (some truck mechanics) and taught to drive that way from the beginning.

So you are saying that I-shift,M-drive don't use the clutch?
Better check you facts again because that's wrong.

I was never taught to double clutch. Even floated the gears on the drive test and passed. yeah I use the clutch occasionally and I am always heavy. 80k is like spring break for the truck.

Are these driver/trainers that are frowning on DC'ing? If it is just fellow drivers, don't worry about it. Drive how you want. But you will most likely migrate to a mostly floating technique over time. Most drivers do. And it will likely be a matter of weeks/months, not years.

When you get the timing down, and the feel, you will be able to tell that you didn't need the clutch on that shift. That is when you will start to float.

And I don't get the whole "some guy floating gears tore up the transmission...". I'll bet dollars to donuts those same guys would be tearing up equipment DC'ing too.

Ya, Tell me this when you have to replace the 5k clutch that you wore out in 200k instead of 750k to a million.

Scott101, that last little bit is so true. I have ridden with guys who only DC and make you cringe every few minutes. I drive 3 trucks on a daily basis the one I float with is a internationl straight truck with a 9 speed. 2800 gallon fuel truck. Do 20 home deliveries stop 20 times a day man thats way to mutch clutching. I would be worn out

Yes, some guys just tear stuff up. I've experienced the same cringe factor. I politely called out one guy on it. He basically just slams the shifter into the next gear. He told me he didn't have the patience to shift smoothly. :-/

Like stated above, it depends on what the truck is telling you. I have a lowboy i tow around, truck trailer and booster is 92 feet long. with a heavy load ( D8)
I like to DC when slowing down, but when taking off in float, truck slows down to fast to DC then. Do what feels right to you. No good or bad shifting, just bad truckers shifting.

Gotta know how to use both techniques proficiently because circumstances can require double clutching or allowing floating.

Double clutching is not at all "bad", and whoever told you that is a knucklehead.

You're relatively new, so I would advise that you learn and do it the "textbook" way for a while before you attempt shortcuts. That way you learn the mechanics of things.

That said, floating isn't bad either IF you do it well. It's VERY bad if you can't. That is a good way to break gear teeth.
