Free play on brake paedal

Maybe you can clean the brake valve. Using brake (name type) cleaner and a can of compressed air.

 

There is a spring on the brake mechanism that usually breaks around 500,000 mls or so. You could buy another but, I never bothered as it works fine without it. If you pull the kickplate to adjust the switch you'll probably find the pieces of that spring.
