And one day we will have a full fledged mining colony on mars. Yes, driverless trucks are coming. Still doesn't mean it's happening in our lifetime.

See, i think the point they are missing is who will agree to just sit and use up their hours of service while the truck takes over driving for a pay that i am certain would be considerably less for the bulk of the miles. Truck driver had to take over in an emergency, so he is on duty, not driving.

Well at least one thing is for sure. A robotic truck can drive the full 11 hours. If a driver is still required to be ready to take over, he/she will have to log it as on duty, not driving, chewing up hours needlessly. I cannot (at least not now) see any robotic truck where a co-driver can safely go into the sleeper.

I really do not want to see robotic (autonomous) whatever they wish to call it/them.

I would highly suspect that cameras would be all over that thing to, to catch anyone messing with it on the roads.

    Jake Brake Thanks this.

Not Terminator, "Dark Angel". The show with a young Jessica Alba and that guy that plays Tony Denozo(sp?) from NCIS. Set in a future where terrorists set off a pulse bomb that wipes out all the electronics. Overnight, America becomes a 3rd world country.

I really don't think a lot of people realize how far down the road this is already.
These things are already on the roads being tested (With approval) and working hard on legal approval to get them legal.
Trains , aircraft , ships and offload trucks are already operating commercially with out humans controlling them.
I think that autonomous trucks with drivers for backup are closer than most realize.
The challenge to general interstate trucks with out drivers at all is not so much a technical issue as a perception/political issue.
Technically they are about ready to go.
