Make one out of thick wall pvc pipe. Two ten foot pieces, one union and a 90 degree elbow. No glue needed.Use 1 inch diameter or greater so it will not flex.

found one on the net for $150 a few years ago,,most only go 15ft,, I used to measure off the deck then measured the deck to ground

 

I'd just make one.

 

ive seen some pilot cars use a surveyor measuring stick

 

How much high stuff do you do?
How much does it cost to be wrong and hit a bridge?
I paid >$300 for mine! it's a high quality survey one that has a tape in the sight that let's me measure fractions up to 25'. I do a lot of high loads, so to me it was dirt cheap.
If you do lots of high work, it's a valuable and wise investment to buy a good one. Look for a survey supply outfit for one of the high end units. The T/A at Walcott, IA. has some lower end very usable ones for about $150 if I recall.

And you'll need to either buy a blade kit for it or get a piece of 4' aluminum angle and make a blade.

I have both and prefer the smaller one most of the time. I personally would not recommend making your own especially if your going to be using it often or hauling high value loads. I don't know about anyone else but the last thing I want to do is try to explain to an insurance lawyer how accurate my home made piece of pipe is when facing a several million dollar claim.

Do y'all really just go full speed through bridges / underpasses where your within 2 inches? I don't got enough balls to trust a sign that's been up for years when you factor in spring thaw shifts.

I would 100% trust a homemade tape measure stick because I'd rather trust something I've set up and made and know is right because I don't trust other people to secure my load.

Its about trusting yourself and respecting that with open deck freight you are responsible for securing your freight, its my children's future on the line.
