A/C clutch question, is the a/c clutch that is on the compressor suppose to constantly run or should it kick off from time
To time? I was told by a mechanic that it is suppose to stay on. But to me that seems like it would make it burn up. Your advice on this is greatly appreciated.

if your ac is on or defrosters on it would run but normally short periods intill it flips the high pressure switch

the high pressure switch triggers the fan. unless it has a second switch. to which i haven't driven many trucks that actually had 2.

my w9 only had one. for the fan. and yes, it ran all the time untill it got low on freon. or the outside temps were below 80.

    The compressor should cycle on/off

every ac system I have worked on rig wise has had either 2 switches or one that controlled both the ac clutch and fan

Check it out. Turn off AC, wait a few min to let sides balance out or it will likely go off on high head pressure if compressor is engaged with out allowing time, there is a high head pressure switch to prevent this. Set to full cold turn on AC ,idle will go up a few rpm to compensate for compressor drag and engine fan will kick in providing air flow over coil ,when desired temp is reached thermostat will cut off compressor. So depends on outside ambient temp how long compressor runs. Turn off AC ,leave cab fan blower on. Engine fan should cut off if not called for by eng temp . The air exiting the registers should be noticeably warmer if the compressor is shutting off. And it's not supposed to run all the time, that would wear it out faster, does a window AC compressor run all the time.

The a/c compressor should cycle on and off, the "freeze switch" in the hvac unit controls the cycling when the system is running. If it runs steady when the system is on could be low on charge or a stuck freeze switch, if it runs when the system is turned off it most likely a stuck relay in the pd box.
What year is it as KW changed a few componets through the years.

Might be a sticker on you CAC or somewhere on left front engine area telling how much freon. I think mine takes 2.5 lbs but not 100% sure on that.

The amount of freon needed is different between a day cab and a sleeper.
