The last two posts are correct. For years, I never had a problem getting weights on CAT scales, then we got a 2015 Cascadia & I started having all sorts of problems with my steers. I asked on this forum & got lots of help. I started releasing my trailer brakes (set the tractor brakes) & now everything is exactly like it should be.

So, it varies with different trucks & I am sure with different trailers. So, just because its the case with one, doesn't make it the case with all. Again, I never had a problem setting the truck & trailer brakes when getting CAT scale weights until we got a new 2015 Cascadia.

But, to answer one post, & as another post clears up, it has to do with the air bags deflating & pushes the tractor forward & shifts the weight around.

    Hope this helps.. good luck...

If your pulling a tanker, you'll be sitting on the scale a lloonnggggg time if you set your brakes. The surge settles down a lot quicker if you let the truck roll back and forth and settle down. Just watch you don't roll off of the scale!

For drivers who run in cold wet/snowy weather you learn fast not to set trailer brakes when you stop .. It sucks crawling under trailer to break frozen brakes free .. They can freeze in less than a hour if cold enough PS if your trying to slide axles and pin is hard to pull pull what I do is use spike to hold trailer and tug lightly with truck then set tractor brake and dump trailer air .. As trailer pushes forward you can usually pull pin easy if you catch it right

If you ever wish to see the inside of a scale house,,,just roll up on the platform and lock the brakes hard..."driver,,pull around back..."

You can screw the load cells up BAD by doing that! Then they have a scale that is out of calibration. Could take weeks to get it serviced and re-calibrated(bummer).

never set your brakes on a cat scale (or any scale for that matter) let the scale find center and settle a bit before pushing the button to contact the cashier.

Pull on the scale and stop.
Leave it in gear and turn the truck off.
The truck won't roll if it is in gear, and you don't need to set the brakes.
You will get a good scale every time.

Scan0009.jpg I never set my brakes on a Cat Scale, I keep it in gear and turn the motor off, on a air ride trl. if the air evacuates when setting brakes it will through the weights off.
