I live in Oshawa (GTA) and I am a couple weeks away from my road test. In preparation for my new career I have been trying my best to narrow down the best place to start for a newbie. In my research I've come across Bison ( which I know is a 2 year commitment), Kirska ( who I believe use automatic transmissions) Schneiders, TTR (which is 5 minutes from my house) and Challenger ( who I actually have an in with but not seeing good things about). Any thoughts on these or other places to start out for a newbie would be greatly appreciated. I'm willing to do what I have to to earn my stripes but would like to at least be home for my resets. Is this a realistic ambition for a rookie? Any advice is welcomed.

Wherever you start the pay will be bottom end. With time your options will open up if your willing to learn. Keep an open mind and do not think you know everything. You'll be fine. Good luck

Oh I have no misconceptions... I'm fully aware that I probably don't even know the questions yet much less the answers. Thanks for the advice it's all welcomed.

2 year commitment? Sign up for work and enter a prison? I can say bison drivers are generally happy with their work when I have talked to them in past at fuel island or restaurant. Same goes for kriska. Challenger ...not so much. Ttr would be lots of runs into Quebec back and forth. Probably another good choice there.

The two year commitment with bison is part of their driver finishing program, which I understand is pretty good but 2 years does seem a tad lengthy. I've heard good things about Kirska as well, they were even recommended to me by a recruiter from an outfit that doesn't hire newbies. My only concern with them is that my instructor and the few trucker friends that I have, have all told me that it's probably wise to stay away from automatic trucks as a rookie because it could limit my options down the road. Thank you for your advice I appreciate all the information I can get.

I would never sign a 2 year commitment anywhere..... And ESP at what bisons paying.... I'd also stay away from automatics

I have a friend that endured the Bison program. They do have the best training program available. But it is almost slavery to expect a driver to work for $500 a week. You do not get an assigned truck until the last part of the 2 years. You will be slip seating. That is a deal breaker for me!

I appreciate the input... Also ... If anyone knows of any good companies for rookies that I might have missed... That information would also be greatly appreciated.

Mackie has yards in Oshawa and whitby. They are decent to work for. Oshawa is house moving, and whitby is flatbed, reefer and dry van. Automatic transmissions for the most part but a few that aren't. I Drove an automatic after school and I don't think it was a bad thing. It was great in Toronto traffic. I like driving stick better now but it wasn't bad as I was getting better driving a truck and trailer. one less thing to worry about.
