Is this true? I've used the 2 hr rule once when there was an accident but I can not remember if it was my 14 or 11 I went over. If you aren't able to extend your 14 the 2 hr extension would have limited benefit.
    Thanks

It's supposed to have limited benefit. :D

Seriously though, it's really not intended for an irregular route carrier. It's more for the LTL guys with their regularly scheduled runs, so they don't have to try and fetch a dozen trucks everytime there's an accident. I don't think I could, with a straight face, explain to a cop that I was driving well into hour twelve because of an accident in hour three, unless I was on some sort of regular run.

OP, not meaning to be a buster, okay? Accidents happen. Construction zones happen. Major backups will happen. You went over your 14...how the heck did that happen? Without blowing your 11? Unless you're trashing around somewheres, that should almost never happen.

Say for example, you day begins at 0700. Automatically, you know that you need to be off the road at 2100. 11 plus 30 plus whatever you company policy of pre trip, post trip and fuel would put you at 1900 if you ran straight through. Even if you didn't run straight through because of loading or unloading, your trip plan from the beginning should have been to be parked by 1900. That gives you the wiggle room for the unexpected.

But Six, I was going for maximum miles.

I understand, friend. I would too. That's why start my day by fueling up, and put the hammer down all day and only stop at the end of the day. Getting fuel and stopping to eat in the middle of your day hurts bad. See, that's the bad thing about elogs, you get penalized for taking a midday nap. Once the clock starts you gotta go. Worse thing is, you wasn't very productive ( didn't turn in much miles), ate up your clock, got a violation, AND shot the next day in the foot too.

From here on, see what you can do in 12 hours, start to finish, if you do, you should never have an HOS issue, well, unless you burn though your 70.

It was explained to me when I got a local job that we are allowed 1 day out of the week go over our 14 using the 16 hr rule, by law. This is not straight driving but making many stops and if in any weather rain, snow, you have to roll back your tarp and retarp at each and every stop. Lots of work lots of time. Then a 3 hr drive to yard.

if youre intrastate you work by 16 every day. if at any time of that week you go interstate/(out of state) then you have to finish off your week by the 14/hr rule.

Lots of ifs and buts here....If your jammed in a backup for hours what can you do...pull over and take your 10 hr break NO you must go to a safe heaven period. Then send a message to the logs department and keep that message on your q for the next 8 days end of story no DOT will have a fit over that just like your company just filed it away.....It sound to me your doing the right thing and things will happen along the highway...

    Be safe out there
