We are investigating equipment to move from a 6 axle rig to a seven axle rig. We would have a four axle tractor. I believe I would like a 53' trailer with a 29.5' well. I would go with a fixed tridem if it would allow me the possibility of a removable 4th axle on the trailer either a flip or a stinger. If not, I would just go with the 48' trailer with a tandem and a flip. So....down to brass tacks. I want to run primarily in MN, IA, WI, IL, IN, MI, OH, PA, WV, and MD. Could we operate in these states with a closed 4 axles or would a stinger be required? Do any of these states cause issues with overall length and requiring escorts? Our extended area would include anything East of I-35. Are there other states in this area that would cause issues for this type of setup?

Watch pin law in Mn. But you can buy an mty move permit for that. I found out the hard way.
Those states yes you can run a tight four and be ok. Now Mo. Ok. Nc. and Wy. Well that's west of I35 lol They will most likely only give you 72,000

with wanting a 29.5 well at 53ft you will sacrifice the length of your neck unless you get a flip neck. also your concentrated weight rating will be compromised with a 29 well. unless you are willing to pay a premium for it. 26 ft is the norm with a 55 ton. now if your not going to haul real heavy but where you are just over what you can haul on six then you maybe able to deal with a lower concentrated weight rating. for the states you want to run in a quad will do just fine. and as long as you stay under 90ft in length no escorts. now in md. you will need an escort if you go over 120000lbs on gross. if your just going to stick to 7 axle freight a 48 tandem with 3rd axle flip would work and have the longer neck with out the flip neck.

Cpape, we run 45 and 55ton trailers that have a lift third axle, with mounting for a 4th flip or stinger, that may be another option for you guys

I like this thread and I don't think we use it enough so I thought I would revive it. Let's talk binders, I have 4 Durabilt binders I carry rated at 15,000, I like the binders fine but I hate hate hate the hooks. The rest of my binders are Columbus McKinnen's rated at 9200, I like those real well but I need higher weight ratings for use with my 1/2 inch chains. What are you guys using and what are the rated for?

I don't know the brand (never paid attention) but all mine are rated at 16000. half have the ball bearing on the lock that you have to keep lubed almost all the time for it to work effortlessly. the other half have the spring on the lock that works well with no lube. I attached slip hooks on all the binders on one end along with the regular hook to have the option when needed. also removed the cotter keys and put slip pins on all the hooks of the chains to be able to remove the hook if need be for those tight spots.
