I drive a 95 t600 now with a super10 and series 60. Wanting to upgrade to a Pete. Looking at a couple 99s and a 2000. All are 379exhd. Three are cummins and one with a Detroit. All have the unibilt sleepers. One has a 13 and the rest have straight tens. All are between 30-40k and have 1-1.4 mill on the clock. What are some things to look for on these? Are there better years to look for? And just to point out if anyone says buy a cat your barking up the wrong tree. My driveway is cursed to where cats break when they pull in. Thanks for the help

I'd buy the 13 speed and them were good years for petes just get an oil sample done by a real lab not speedco cant go wrong with either a detriot or cummins and im with you cats are overrated.

Hi T, I agree with poppapump, these are good years for Pete (hence, so many miles) You didn't say how many miles are on your K-Whopper, but buying a truck with those many miles, you may not be gaining anything. Personally, I'd go with the 10 speed, for 2 reasons. Quite frankly, I'm tired of shifting ( I'll be in the cold ground before I drive a truck with an automatic), and they are a little simpler, and with the power of todays motors, splitting isn't really necessary, (except off road, of course) I've always been a Cummins owner, but the newer Detroit's are great motors. I've always said, the worst part about owning a Peterbilt, is dealing with Peterbilt. Definitely cool trucks. Today, if I drove again, it would have to be a Pete.

I don't think there is enough time for me to complain about that kW. It's old and its #####y. I want a truck I feel comfortable in and like to be seen in. And thanks for the tips. Anything I should watch out for? Probably going to be buying from a dealer.

And I want a 13 for those times I "accidentally" get way over loaded. I don't like lugging. It's hard on everything. But one cummins has 565hp so I think that would do just fine with a 10 behind it

Well, a truck with that many miles (a million) usually has had everything replaced at least once. I guess the biggest thing, is get oil and coolant samples, and get them yourself, if you can. I wouldn't trust a dealer any farther than I could throw them, and the sample they show you may or may not be from the truck you are buying. I only bought 1 truck at a dealer, my '72 Pete in the avatar, and that was only because they let me call the previous owner. (plus, I knew what I was buying) I like buying from private parties, because you can talk to the owner, and find out just what went into it over the years. My experience is with older trucks, the electrical components begin to fail and that can be maddening. You'll do OK with a Pete. I wouldn't drive anything but. Good luck.

If I were you I would wait a bit and read up on whether or not 1995 will be the cut off for when you need to set your speed limiter. Up here, anything manufactured before 1995 is exempt. You may wish you kept that '95 if it was built in 1994. Plus, it might be worth alot more shortly.

Hi rank, I'm out of the loop, and I love it, but what is this about "speed limiters" now? Years ago, we had "speed limiters", they were called Detroit motors. :biggrin_2559:

LOL Semi. It sounds like you Yanks are going to copy Canada instead of the other way around this time. Your ATA wants speed limters and the govt seems to agree and that will create havoc like it has up here. Electronic engines were pretty much everywhere by 95 so the Ontario and Quebec governments decided trucks with a build date prior to Jan 1 1995 wouldn't be requured to comply with the law. Not sure how the US law will read. Those trucks will hold their value trust me.
