Local work in Florida...?

Hello Tanker Forum!

At the moment I have a pretty solid and stable home daily job. I had to relocate for this job and have no reason to be where I am other than work, which I will continue to do for awhile. I work with a good group of folks and have been at it for some months now. I don't plan on leaving anytime soon but in about a year or two I would like to possibly relocate to Florida. It's the mecca for just about every hobby I enjoy and the type of environment I enjoy living in.

Now one of the big requirements for me is that I want to be home on a daily basis, I would also like to have enough time at the end of my day to do more than simply sleep, eat and work. I've been told by many a person that I should look into fuel hauling, it's also something I've always wanted to do. I've also been told that most fuel haulers who do local work don't usually have much over a 10 hour day if that, have more normal hours and I've also heard the pay can be quite decent as well.

I've looked online and the pickings in Florida seem quite slim. I've been told that Florida is a horrible market for Truck Drivers, but the gas stations must get their fuel some how, right? I've not seen any postings by the big companies in Florida like Groendyke, UPT, Coastal Transport, Gemini, etc. The only one I've really seen is one called Florida Rock & Tank, which I was told (not sure if true) that they don't pay very much. I would like to at least gross about 52k+ a year.

So, are there any good fuel hauling jobs in Florida? Ones with decent hours and decent pay? Any companies to look out for or research? Any personal experiences in the area or advice? I would prefer to be in the Miami area, but are other parts of Florida better for this?

I imagine the same can be said for most sunny, warm weather, desirable places to live. I definitely know what you mean. I hear Southern California is honestly less so because the prices are so high that most blue collar truck drivers don't want to waste their time there. I've wondered about Hawaii too but have been told you basically need to know some one or know some one who knows some one and that the pay isn't as good as California but the price of living is the same.

I can see why some where affordable, beautiful and fair weather like Florida would be.

 

I hear ya. That's no kind of life for me either. I would prefer to keep my hours no more than 50 or so per week, even if I took a slight pay cut. I work 50-55 hours a week right now but it's a night shift so it's kind of tough. I can deal with it but some day I'd like a day shift. I don't think I'd mind nights as much if it involved more multiple stops and actually getting out of the truck instead of A to B and back to A.

 

I doubt I would live in Orlando. I really want to be near the water, that would be my main reason for going to Florida.

 

A bit too far north for me. If I wasn't in Miami I think I'd like to be in the Tampa area, possibly Naples? I would even consider the Panhandle areas. I just don't think I'd much like the northern Atlantic side, I want more of a tropical feel. Crazy sounding I know, but we only live once and I love palm trees, warm weather and nice water. I guess it's just a dream of mine I'd like to attain.
