Maybe the civil air patrol LOL. But he would have a hard time with a 12 yr old being his commander

Sorry if I offended you guys so bad. Actually, I am a veteran, 6 years active, plus 4 in the reserves. I just dont go around "flaunting it" and demanding respect or acknowledgement of it. Nobody owes you anything. I think it should be mandatory for every citizen to serve. But that is not the case. You guys talk like its so hard to get in? Now thats a joke. Scoring high on the asvab? You only need a pulse. But Im sure this was a great accomplishment for all of you. You probably had to study for it. The military in late has become a glorified welfare program, in other words, a campout for screwups. Have a felony? No problem. Got your girlfriend pregnant and need quick bennies and a paycheck. Your in. Flunk out of college? Hey you have some college, thats more then most in there. I have the greatest respect for people who have sacraficed their lives for this Country, but not for people who simply pretend they have because they contributed a drop in the ocean. And if it was so great, why did you get out? Did you see a roehl poster on base and say "Hey, Look, salary, they prefer vets". People fear getting out because that bi monthly checks not going to drop into their account anymore, and thats of course understandable. Security is a great feeling. But for a company to be able to use your GI Bill to pay you, while they short you and then let the GI Bill fill the space, is just wrong. But hey, its not like you guys are going to use higher education anyway, you all seem so smart. In the end, you guys are making like .25 cpm. And if having a "veteran" sticker on your truck makes up for that, then I guess its all good.

Last I checked nobody here was flaunting or demanding anything. You feel like a big man hiding behind your user name, I'm sure. You're quick to toss out insults on people's intelligence but I'm willing to bet you wouldn't be so vocal in person. We aren't lowering your miles, but feel free to cling to that claim. If you're getting crappy miles it's likely a result of your apparent superiority complex and attitude. I'm proud of what I did in the military, but it's not something I wished to continue for my own personal reasons. I paid into the GI Bill and I'm free to use it any way I please, I don't need a piece of paper from money sucking university to prove my self worth, no offense to anybody striving for higher education. Again, you don't like the way things are run here? Move on. Just don't go to Schneider or Anderson, their apprenticeship guys will steal your miles too.

Nate, im still in. I will try to do my 20 yrs, but right now they are looking at med retiring me early. My 4 trips to iraq in the last 4 yrs has messed up my breathing. But you are right the military has changed alot since i came in. But as for flaunting it, im proud to say i am serving, not flaunting it. I didn't get the GI Bill when i came in, i turned it down and i still got my degree out of my pocket and with the help of tuition assistance. So if i do the Honor Program, i will not be getting the extra money and i will be doing the milage pay. So be proud of your military experience, but don't look down on others that are taking advantage of the program that is for them.

All Im saying is that in my opinion, the honor program is a rip off, for most drivers anyway. And I am happy with my miles. And being a complainer? Youll see when you get out on the road. Andre, your gripe about miles, Try to stick it out for at least 3 more months. Then for your area try Interstate Dist, May, Kllm.

Your opinion I can respect, but I have heat with mindless insults and baseless claims.

Honor Program drivers are not insecure clowns, we're not uneducated or too dumb to understand the pros/cons of being on salary. We don't pretend to have contributed more than we did and we don't flaunt or demand. You don't know what any of us did during our time in and you don't know our reasons for separating.

If you have a problem with the salary program, fine, but the drivers that tend to blame us for not getting miles usually have bigger issues than Honor Program guys. And we don't need crusaders or martyrs that think it's their worldly duty to protect us from getting screwed by the evil corporation.

I am well aware of all the possible scenarios that could come my way. I am not going to just vanish off the board because trucking is too hard for me. I may move on from Roehl, but I never intended to be here long term. Long enough to get my experience and then move on to bigger, better, more specialized hauling. I see the strings that control the system and I'm happy working that system to my advantage. I've done the math, I know what I'd be making on mileage pay, and right now it's less than on salary.

I read this post because I am interested in learning more about Roehl.

I have never served in the military, although when I graduated college in the mid 1990's, I looked into the Navy as a possible career option with a direct commission as an officer. I turned it down, and went into corporate America. Now, here I sit 10 plus years later, and my "piece of paper" from the "money hungry university" I attended seems to have left me feeling useless....serious, I am not ragging on the person who made this statement, I cant find a decent job in this absurd economy we live in. I have tracked a decline in my field over the last 18 months with many people I know being laid off, or having to do the work of 3 people ( although the company will not admit it) to cover layoffs, etc.

So, I have started thinking about trucking, and Roehl, which brings me here today. However, looking back, I wish I had pursued that opportunity then with the Navy. I would probably have a nice rank by now, an attractive Officers pay grade, and looking to retire in less than 8 years or so. My point is, regardless of what the military has or has not become, its really a good option for someone who is exploring careers. Why Not?? There is decent pay if you stay in long enough for both enlisted and officers, job security greater than most civilian jobs, and a host of benefits, medical and otherwise....you get the idea. Plus, you have the pride of having served our country. No one wants to go into the military for fear of being sent into a war zone, which is why they have lowered the standards for enlistment. But its still an honorable career for those that choose this path.

I am sorry for the rant, but I just had to share this thought. Even today, I think sometimes about joining the reserves ( I think they will take you up to 40 now!) Why? little extra money, pride, etc. As for trucking? Well, I don't know if its for me or not and I am still researching, but I value home time. I am in a financial position where I would be fine making a little less $$ to have more time at home, and as such I like the 7/7 and 7/4-7/3 fleets that Roehl has posted in my area. For me, a little less mileage ( and less pay) with a 7/7 fleet in exchange for the home time would better keep my balance in check. And then after a year of doing this, I would be able to land a local job with an LTL carrier ( we have lots here in my area) and get home everyday. I know a few drivers who do local and LTL runs to and from terminals, and they all make decent money. Sounds good in theory anyways, its getting there that is hardest....o.k. rant over.

I can respect anybodies decision to further their education, however it's not something I see as beneficial to me. My best friend, for example, busted his butt to work his way through college and earned his bachelors degree in history; a noble field of study and something he is truly passionate about. He now works for a temp agency answering phones. Does he want to? Heck no, but that's the only work he can find. He was even turned down by the Peace Corp to teach history in a 3rd world country. How many people with degrees do you see working as a waiter or waitress? A degree isn't a promise of anything and just doesn't seem worth my time and effort. If I am that interested in a specific subject, I'll just buy some books and read up.

I like this industry and came into knowing there will be tough times ahead. My brother is an O/O and I heard all the pro's and con's from him before I even started training. I enjoy driving and I enjoy the extra work that comes with flatbedding. We are what makes this country run and I don't need a degree for it; just patience and work ethic.
