why you do not want a automatic.

I don't really race from stop light to stop light, when loaded I don't accelerate very fast since I like to take care of my truck especially under stress.

When empty I like to get up to speed, and our Paccar engine gets there quick without missing a beat. I'm not having to stomp on the fuel and red line the engine to get anywhere, it does well on its own being smooth on the throttle. Empty it gets where I need to be fairly quickly, usually 45mph. I like to keep with the flow of traffic. I always shift before 1500rpm when empty. I don't like taking my engine to high in the rpm range.

My boss is a different story, he drives it like he stole it lol

gee flybynight you are really a bad ### trucker!! Opps can't use ### so how about a "Bad" trucker and I don't mean the Michael Jackson kind of bad,,,
Skip shifting?? I wonder why then are the gears numbered 1 thru 9,10, 13 etc..
Glad I did not have you driving one of my trucks

Auto shift are bought by carrier now to reduce training time for new drivers and for fuel economy as well as being able to hire drivers that can't drive a multi gear transmission with a clutch,,
I prefer stick shift,,have owned allisions,,driven every kind of automatic shift trans out there but prefer an 18spd,,

    BostonTanker and DrtyDiesel Thank this.

I got one you probably have not driven... Cat 7155 16 speed air assisted semi automatic... Found only, to my knowledge in the early incarnations of the M915 Series Army Tractors. They were eventually replaced with an Allison 5 speed auto

Wow, I thought the Army was a testing ground for that POS. Drove one for a few years in Germany way back it wasn't very good.

Well, I'm chime in with my experiences with our Allison auto in our Cascadia Expediting Straight truck.....
I LOVE IT!!!! With our truck we get 9.6 mpg avg... Keep in mind, fully loaded for us is 32,000 gross so we're only carrying 11,000 lbs max in the box. I drive it a bit harder than my wife from a start and my avg mileage is a touch better than her's, maybe because I spend more time on cruise and I don't let the engine lug going up hills, I get on the pedal just as I start dropping speed and the cruise takes over from there keeping the rpm's high enough to get up the hill without losing speed. We've been literally from coast to coast with this truck and I have to say, if I don't drive another manual in my career I won't be heartbroken. I can't believe why anyone would want a manual for city driving?? I love this auto in the city or traffic jams, no more sore left knee for me. I'll second what another has said about the engine brake in this thing..... On stage 3 it takes throttle control to keep the thing from throwing us through the windshield ;) I came down Cabbage Patch with 10,000 lbs (almost our max) in the box and never touched the brakes.

If you don't mind me asking what is you engine rated at, I am assuming it's a DD13?
