Can a faulty or carboned up EGR valve cause major engine failure from low boost and overfueling ? I've been driving a 2006 Volvo with the 530 hp ISX and the boost has been fluctuating and putting out a lot of black smoke from the exhaust. It has been doing this for at least the past year when I took over driving this truck. This past Sunday the engine blew up big time. i wound up jack knifing into a ditch. it has a huge hole in the side of the engine and dumped all the oil and engine parts for about 400 yards in the rain soaked right lane of I-80 in Pa., so again could the bad EGR could have caused this whole situation ?

Wow... I would ask Cummins that question. Not to mention, why were you running the truck for so long knowing there was something wrong??? 530HP should a pretty strong pulling truck and if it's putting out masses of black smoke, it should have been put into the shop.
Re EGR, I think depending upon which way the valve sticks, black smoke could/would be a problem. Also poor fuel mileage is also another part of a sticky EGR Valve. Now, completely blowing up the engine?? I think there might have been something else wrong. A blown block. Woops. Sounds very expensive. -
Don't bother asking Cummins. I doubt very much that you will get an honest or factually correct answer. Along with UltraZero, why was the truck run that way for so long.

Running with a known defect is a great way to wind up in big trouble, especially if it caused an accident.
And yes, high EGT will certainly kill any diesel.
Black smoke is a virtual gaurantee for high EGT as you are overfueling the motor and it's not burning completely. -
Thanks for the replies. The company didn't want to pay the $$$ to get it repaired even though the shop that re placed the leaking air to air recommended it. and yes, the fuel mileage went down from 6.5 to 4.2 - 4.9 mpg. The difference in fuel mileage last year could have paid for the repair and then some. But the company said to run it as is.

I doubt the egr cause it , I read many similar stories about ISX pre- DPF generation blowing a hole through engine block; from what I read I understand the rods are touching the block after some wearing;
i remember a post here a guy purchased one used and first trip got same problem; I know an OO working here got same problem with a 2005 Volvo with isx, the rods made a hole in block at aproxamitly 700k miles running slowly on flat I-35 close to Laredo; he sold the truck for parts.Last edited: Jun 20, 2015
