Well this week has not been a good week. Been idling a lot waiting on a load to take.. Its been close to 100 outside. Anyway i changed my oil about 9,000 miles ago and today i had around half dipstick.(OIL was hot today) Should i just check my oil when its cool or hot? Also is it normal to use oil. Its a cummins ISX 07 NO DPF just EGR. When i had a dyno done they said it had 6 inches of blowby with 615,000 miles on it. No major work done that we know just replaced oil cooler. Would this amount of blowby be decent for miles? Should i just expect this oil useage. Don't see oil leaking anywhere..
Oil useage?

Pete, I just had an oil change at 22,250m on my DD60, 14L, 980K miles. We just sent if off a few days ago, and I'm hoping to get some good factual information from it. Are you thinking of sending in an oil sample? I guess it's a pretty useful tool. I don't really know what "6" of blowby" means, can you give me a hint? Thx
-
To be honest im not sure how blowby is measurable all i know is it has 6inches of blowby lol. Yea im do oil samples don't have a test kit right now so when i go home im take a sample and leave it it at home in a clean jar

Blowby is a reading of the pressure in the crankcase, the higher the reading, the more combustion that the piston rings are allowing to pass into the crankcase. 6 inH20 is about the high side of the spec on that I do believe.

does that normal mean the Pistons are going out? If i get value set will that bring blowby down? Just got the truck and idk when a value set was done. So i wanna get it donebaha Thanks this.

An overhead adjustment would be a good idea if you do not know much about the history of the engine. Should be done every 100k miles or so. Unfortunately if you have a high blowby reading, a "valve set" wont help. It means the piston rings are worn. I would run it for a while and see how much oil you are actually using. There are plenty of trucks that burn 1-2 gals of oil in between changes (10-15,000 miles)

Would idleing make me burn oil? Last time before i changed the oil i had almost 11,000 on it and didn't add any oil but this time i added some within 9,000. There has been some work done new oil cooler cleaning up algae on the truck. And idling is very high right now.

There's a thread on here BLOW BUY ?? That explained how its measured. I dont think Doing a valve set will help with blow buy issues. Where did you get your oil change done?
-
Some times the valve stem seals wear and allow oil down in to the piston.

If you can CK oil when eng. is stone cold each time it will be easer to keep track of oil use, Your truck seems to use oil about normal, if you turn up idle to 9 or800rpm while its just sitting running A/C it may use less oil because its doing some work at hi idle not just letting oil pass thru rings at low idle.
