Swift trucks don't have APU's and they want your idle to be in the 18% range.
With 10 hours of driving that would be around 1.7 hours.
I've always ignored it and idle as I need to.
I got written up for my idle time once, a few years ago.
Now it is not even mentioned.

I have had APU units since 2008. I couldn't imagine not having one! You have to be able to sleep comfortably. It's a safety issue.

My company asks us to be reasonable. My truck is set up so that if I maintain 29% or less idle time, my top speed is 69 mph foot/67 mph cruise. Above that it's 66 mph. Right now I'm at 23%

And I am sure your drivers thank you for the hotel...great job. I dont understand the no idel laws theres nothing toxic coming out....its clean idel. I idel even when it says not to by law...only ever had some dock boss #####...I said its green unload me faster and I will be gone...still took 4 hours. If we cant idel why should the cops be allowed to idel

that depends on teh year of the truck. anything earlier then 08 doesn't idle as clean as the newer trucks.
i have yet to have an apu. and the 16 FL i'm in now. uses almost as little fuel as an apu. i have yet to exceed 2.5 gallons 5 hour mark for a nap. -
It is definitely a safety issue. How long will it be before some smart lawyer who is charging some poor driver with negligence after a fatal accident checks to see if the driver slept with the engine running ? If the truck could not idle the lawyer would say the driver was fatigued. What about OSHA. If we are forced to sleep in a 100 degree truck that falls under OSHA.

Had a ProStar/Cummins equipped with a Detroit Diesel Opti Idle system. It was the best ! Besides cooling,,I could leave the truck in a drop yard in the dead of winter and get back in on Monday mornings, cab warmed, full battery charged, ready to roll. Fellow driver said it would start about every three hrs and run for 20 minutes. Could also leave the cooler plunged in and not worry about low batteries. Is this system still in use ? I been retired for a few yrs.

We have always had batt. powered apu's, but on the truck I just ordered I had to go with Opti idle (had to meet a weight restriction) it's a small sleeper and I ordered the best insulation package, I hope it works well.

I thought for sure that idling was allowed for "driver comfort", with specifics to temperature's that allow for this?
There is a list (if I can find it) that does list state by state regarding "driver comfort" allowable idling.
