bull hauling

Kind of off topic but the bull racks seem to have slowed down quite a bit since the fuel prices spiked and everyone's getting more picky with it now. I'm sure they're still covering the same ground in a day just don't seem to be speeding much. 70-75 is about the most I see out of them anymore. Grain haulers and tanks seem to have taken over as the fastest trucks on the road.

The only downside to that is messing up your driving record causing potential problems getting hired somewhere else.

For what it's worth my buddy rarely went over his 70hrs in 8 days but he usually got those 70 hrs in 4 days lol. This was nearly 20 years ago I think he had three log books.

 

You have to do it because you like it, because you want the lifestyle. Not because you think you can make more money. You're not just bumping a dock, you're loading animals that someone has put their time and sweat into raising. Their income depends on you. The longer they're on the truck the more they shrink and that's less money for the producer. Once they're on the truck they're yours, any dead ones you get to buy them.

You don't have to ruin your driving record. You have to be smart. You're going to be loaded heavy most of the time, so that means backroads and dodging scales. Your logbook needs to be done so if you get popped you don't get shut down. If you get shut down its up to you to get them on another truck or find a place to put them on feed and water.

You could be told to be ready to load at 9am and it could be after lunch when they're done sorting. Guess what? You still have 1000 miles to drive. You will be driving all night. When it's hot you need to plan for it. You can't be stopping for 30 min or more to fuel and eat when it's 100 degrees out.

If you just want a paycheck this isn't for you. If you want a challenge and aren't afraid of hard work then it's worth looking in to. Most guys pay 25% or so.
