The guys here with a legitimate concern and he's not painting us all with the same brush so no need to do it to him .. He sounds like a safe aware driver
Why do some drivers engage in this dangerous practice?

But the 4 wheelers actions wont affect you if you have a safe following distance. Plain and simple.
Why do you keep acting like it would be his fault if he was rear ended by a truck? If the truck had a safe following distance it wouldn't hit him. -
True, but he keeps saying trucks, why not say how other 4 wheelers tailgate maybe more than truckers do..??
and if he panics an slams on his brakes, isn't he too at fault. For causing....??
I would think so, if that can be proven in court, and especially if a trucker had a camera..
think of those brake checkers that we have all seen. DO you think it could be proven he did such..???
I think a good lawyer could make a judge or jury believe so....... -
I'm sorry but I don't understand what scenario you're bringing up here with a third car? I do not keep pace with trucks, I'm either passing or holding back behind them. Only truck i have to be ahead of is a gravel hacker who won't cover his load, I like my paint and windshield thanks. But if I can't pass safely ill slow down instead. I do not text, and I do keep eyes out on my mirrors to monitor what is happening around me. You are lumping me in with all the incompetence you see out on the road, when I never accused all or even most truck drivers of being dangerously selfish.
truckon Thanks this. -
this from you in posting number 14
so if you were "unlucky enough", what were you doing, not paying attention as to when they were there.>???? And I never said keeping pace with a truck, I said cars on your side...
this from me in posting number 19
please tell me or show me where I said keeping pace with a truck..??? -
But they always say we are either out to kill them or harm them or whatever else, yet do they actually really take into account their stupid actions, which can lead them to their own deaths..??
No, they never do, they always make sure the word kill is referring to us.... -
If he panics and slams on his brakes it still wouldn't be an issue if you had safe following distance. I think the judge would want to know why you pulled behind the car and started tailgating it.Mr.X Thanks this. -
This is a truck forum, and as professional drivers with more miles and experiance, it seems that trucks would be less likely to engage in this than car drivers. And they are, this exact scenario is a daily occirance with other car drivers, and only a weekly occurance with truck drivers. I even mentioned cars doing this too earlier. However this is a truck forum, not a car forum, and as i understand it you guys have more training and experiance plus longer stopping distances then cars, making it more outrageous when it occurs.
I understand that you guys see a lot of horrible practices undertaken by cars every day on thmindset.I do too, believe me i do. And some may have gotten so bitter to assume everyone in a car is that way. I assure you that isn't the case, but I doubt there is anything I can do to change that mindset. -
Listen, I really think you are musunderstanding me here. I in no way think these drivers are intentionally trying to kill me. But, if I have to make a sudden stop from 70mph and there is a truck 10 ft from me going 65, is he going to be able to stop before plowing into me, potentially doing serious or even fatal harm? What if he pushes me into oncoming traffic going the same speed or faster?
I admit I have done some stupid things around trucks in the past. I drove past one with my highbeams on, not realizing it until I was almost parallel with his mirror. He responded by turning his on once I was passed him, not professional or safe. But did I retaliate by brake checking or slowing down and blasting him with mine again? No. I got the heck out of dodge. Another time I didn't see a truck stopped on the shoulder, it was dark and his lights were off. The truck I was passing went to move over for him without checking his mirrors or signaling and almost ran me off the road. I slammed on the brakes and got back behind him until we were past the truck. Then when I got infront of him he hit me with his highbeams, as though it was my fault he came over into me. That still bugs me to this day but you bet I learned to watch the shoulder then pass by trucks as quickly as I safely could after that. I know I'm not a perfect driver, but I do my best and would never do something I knew would put myself or others in danger. And let me just repeat, the majority of truckers I see out there are amazing, and I have a lot more horror stories with cars, but this is not a car driving forum.tinytim Thanks this. -
Ok I appilogize that was my misinterpretation of what you posted. Sometimes in heavy traffic all lanes are going similar speeds, cars accumulate around you, in that scenario I was simply trying to explain that I could be paying perfect attention, keeping space on either side of me, when something comes up around a blind corner while at the same time cars have moved directly onto either side of me, causing my only way out to be slamming on the brakes. Very unlikely scenario but one in which heavy braking would not be due to my own negligence.
