If I get a place to practice backing should I get a CDL with no school?

With the new federal standards coming in to play. modeled after the State of Washington. Which by the way is the hardest state to get a CDL in. you will need to go through a school.

    I forgot. You're absolutely right.

It goes into nationwide effect in September; if I'm not mistaken.

yes it does. There will no longer be the my dad taught me how to drive. it will be 160 plus hours of schooling. The state of washington has some pilot schools that are doing 375 hours and that may be the new standard. which is not a bad thing.

I got mine in Washington in 2011. It wasn't bad, but I also couldn't compare it to other states. The following month they added the 90 degree back, and the offset back to the DOT test. That's the only change I know of. There may be more.

Ha. Remember when you walked in to an outfit looking for work and with a handshake big daddy threw you the keys to #7. Your word and a handshake was a contract.

    That still happens.

The attitude on this site is that it will not and cannot happen like that. The megas have beat it into everyone's heads that you NEED them to get started. Brilliant marketing move on their part. Guys buy into this bs, I don't get it.

That's the way we do it on the Pipelines. Old school. Already had 3 jobs by word of mouth before this one was over.

You won't save a dime. The companies that will hire people with no formal training don't pay. You also won't do yourself any favors. Backing a couple times in a controlled environment isn't going to teach you anything. Many community colleges have courses now and almost all accredited school will finance it regardless of credit. It's more of an investment than a debt. All you gotta do is clip one sidewalk and it's over for that test. Are you confident in your pretrip, and driving skills to the point that a couple hours will be enough?
