Great so how difficult is it to get into the school? Do you have to get the permit first? I'm also asking about the Indiana school btw.

Check out trucking truth.com they have an excellent cdl training guide, it is tough on certain parts but you will learn a lot. And if your new to driving I think they send them to Marshfield, that's where they were sending me and I'm in southern Illinois.

crazyk, If Roehl has such poor routing for there drivers. Why do they advertize on there web site, they teach trip planing and map reading. When your the driver, of that truck. Why can't the driver plan his own route, the quickest and shortest way to the destination. I don't think I want someone telling me how and where I should drive my truck! Before I call Roehl back and comit to that company. I want to know the truth, not a bunch of BS, from them.

You will learn how to plan a trip using Roehl's method of calculation. I still use their method to this day (10 years later) for basic calculations to determine if I have the hours to take a load. I'm now at Schneider on the O/O choice board. My routing determines how much of revenue I get to keep. More miles than what the company has calculated that they are paying on and the cents per mile for the load goes down. You may be the driver of the truck but they still own the truck and therefore determine the route that the load takes for best profit. They have used in the past a program called OptiStop to route you. There are companies that allow drivers to plan their own routing but Roehl will not. They never have and I doubt if they ever will. They are a training company and have to absorb a lot of cost with newbie mistakes and routing errors.

I have learned a lot about routing being an owner operator. I was with Roehl as an O/O and looked at their routing suggestions. It was my decision to take it or route myself. Most of the time it made sense to follow their route even if it took me on some smaller roads that I would not have chosen. I have found some really nice secondary roads (4 lane/divided non-interstate) that I now use on a regular basis.

If you want to route yourself then find another company or lease/buy your own truck. I truly understand your frustration of having someone tell you where to go. It was one of deciding factors that launched me into my first lease 6 years ago.

So what is their method of calculation? If you're at liberty to say.

Miles of load divided by 50 mph = approx hrs it takes to do load. Then add in 15 min pre trip,15 post trip, 30 min break, 15 for fuel if needed, and I add approx 1 hr for misc screwing around/potty breaks. Works for me and I'll be within a 15 min window of accuracy. Everyone has they own method.
