Offered job at ABF

I would keep running from Con-way as well Bridgeview to be specific

 

I stayed at a hotel/motel around Atlanta a while back and abf as well as Schneider had accounts there for the drivers/trainees.

Anyways I talked with one of the abf guys and he said he made 88k the previous year not including benefits/pension. He was more of a line haul guy. Said they go home by the trip. Meaning after I think he said 3-4 trips you are aloud to go home.

He could have been full of crap for all I know but he seemed like a good guy.

 

I'd stay away from conway des Plaines and aurora too. Been there, done that.. and you know it's bad when the place is/was run by a guy named "terminator tim"

 

This is what happens at Conway Freight when you put your 2 week notice true story. Happen to a friend.

 

I believe they run just like YRC does.... Run from Point A to point B then go to bed at the hotel... Return next day to Point A

 

I get it. My buddy was working the oil fields working 90hrs a week 6 days bragging about making 90-100k sleeping 4 hrs a day to work nights. That's brutal and unhealthy but people will do it and think it's the greatest. I was like I'm cool with my 80k 50-55hrs a week 2 days off a week.

If you want the holy grail go to UPS Parcel. You'll have to juggle two jobs for 1-3yrs as a part time package handler but once you become a Van package driver you'll thank me. My buddy makes 35hr after of course 10+ yrs but makes 80k and only wants to work 40hrs. He maybe does 45hrs a week. No weekends no holidays 8 hrs a day. Best pension. He can bump into a daytime M-F gravy DAY run if he every got his cdl and make close 150k or more. But he doesn't want the hours.

 

It is one thing to work those ungodly hours when you are single and in your twenties. But after a few decades, the old body just won't stand up to it on a regular basis. And when you have a family, if you want to be there for the kids to grow up, those long hours just aren't worth it.
Just like OTR is not worth it if you are a family man. MY OPINION ONLY.

 

Also. if one has aging parents to take care of, one cannot be on the road as an OTR truck driver.

When I was helping my 2 sisters care for our elderly mother, over 8 years ago, it really limited the number of or types of jobs that I could hold at the time. It was necessary to have the time to spend at home to help care for our mother.
SADLY & UNFORTUNATELY, our mother passed away 9/30/2007. Our father passed away 26 years earlier, 7/2/1981.

In addition to OTR truck driving jobs, active duty military personnel and various other occupations, such as a traveling salesman, also face this SERIOUS situation with aging parents, grandparents, or other relatives who may be dependent on someone to help take care of them.
