Yes be careful not to run freeband radios or kickers or the feds will triangulate your position and the black helicopters will come and haul off to CB jail. :) haha

You would always have people that feel the need to run more power simply to have the biggest gun. Since the FCC seldom cracks down on the cb trolls they would still be there trying to aggravate people. You can't legislate common sense or respect. I dislike turning up the squelch as I may miss an important piece of information such as an accident or traffic jam but the trolls aren't going anywhere so up goes the squelch. What I fail to understand is why some people spend so much time showing everyone what a idiot they are on the air I would think they would want to hide that fact. There are rogue and rude operators on the ham bands just not as prevalent as the cb.

With the type of vehicles we operate the limitations are not in the watts we are allowed on 11 meter, but rather the image plane we drive around. Just get a good export radio, have it tuned clean with a quality antenna. Break....Break

outside of power, what would be the purpose of an export radio?

I can tell you that compared to a properly tuned cb radio, a lot of these radios are just plain junk with their front ends designed for broad coverage and no real transmit section tuning.

First of all there are NO "channels dedicated to "morris code" (Morse Code). Why no FM? Bandwidth. In fact, the Feds have tightened up a lot of the emissions requirements for some of both amateur and military coms. The next reason is, the cellphone, texting, email, facebook, other social media have replaced the CB. The fact is, it occupies a very small segment of the population's interest in communications and serves only a dismal portion of this segment. Only a very few, relative to the rest of the public, have much real need for a CB. It is considered an outmoded, ancient technology. There ARE other services who can compliment the CB such as MURS and FRS, both of which use FM and can offer the quieter comms you seek.

You won't get a segment of the amateur service for a number of reasons. For one thing, much of that is governed by international treaty. Another reason is, the amateurs have clout relative to their service and are well-represented in government AND FCC, and they are organized. They have groups and organizations who "look after" that service to prevent just what you seek. CB is seen as a rowdy, DIS-organized group of rebels and scofflaws, prone to law-breaking. As to emergency services, amateur radio is well-entrenched and has proven to be a well-trained resource in just such emergencies you describe. They are very often found in the thick of disasters providing professional, rapid response communications, handling radio traffic in and out of afflicted areas with trained, coordinated message-handling. Such training is often provided by local clubs and sanctioned by the Amateur Radio Relay League. Operators maintain local nets on repeaters and practice their skills weekly.

Why not explore both FRS, MURS and how to obtain the amateur license?

It is that very addiction to power that causes a lot of the problems. Granted, CB is very crowded, that 's one problem. But when one increases power to "step over" the noise, then the next fellow does the same. Then another, and another---until we get the mess we have now. Then you have the "King of the hill" types who get their jollies walking on others because it substitutes for their own inadequacies as individuals.

Its all part of today's :"me first" syndrome where rude, overbearing people disregard any protocols or courtesy. One upon a time, CB was polite and gentlemanly. People stood by, waited their turn, and likewise, those who had used the frequency limited their talk time, then stood by in turn. In those days one could easily talk across town with what was at the time 5 watts input (more like 3 out) I used to have an old Raytheon with a tuning light on the face. It was an old tube type radio that hummed because of the vibrator power supply. During the short time I used CB, I had a room in a boarding house run by a sweet old lady who dipped snuff. She tried to hide the fact she dipped, but she did, going to great lengths to keep it from others She thought nobody knew!;)

My radio was on the nightstand, and I used to talk to a family clear across town, usually before going to bed. My antenna was one of those back-of-the-set Radio Shack things. but I could get out up to 15 miles---unless somebody DID step on my foot. But that was rare because people had FCC call signs, ID'ed regularly, kept their convos' short, and it WORKED. But I got bored with CB and moved on to other things.

I don't know what the answer is;. you can't put the genie back in the bottle. But it is that extra power and lack of operator coordination and discipline that makes CB the way it is. Its a free-for-all & some people LIKE it that way. Dunno & I can't understand that.

I find the most common users of cb these days is livestock haulers. I have yet to give one a yell and not get answer. Second most common, the jerkoff base operator. There are three in my hometown that get off on acting the fool.

If you're in an area with a steady/heavy presence of coal haulers, or are near a rock quarry or other mine, they'll have a radio on, too. Sometimes they'll be on a different channel, though...especially if the mine/quarry/dock operates on that other channel.
