all i've heard from instructors is that they are slowing down the hire of newbies and focusing more on experienced, but are still hiring. focusing on the negative will only make you anxious, life is too short . . .

I'm finally starting to get real paychecks, no more horrible training pay. The pay is good, especially adding 12.5 Cents tax free from per diem on top of my pay.

    Hi everyone,
I've just read this entire thread and it's been very informative.
I just got home from 2 weeks out with my TE at Schneider out of the Gary OC.
Monday I have to report in to Green Bay STA for my SQT and I'm really nervous about it.
Can anyone tell me just how tight the grading is? I know I can do the job, but I do still have problems now and then with downshifting. Especially when I'm nervous. And I am always nervous when doing a hands on test.
I've turned down several $20 an hour jobs to pursue this way of life and I'd hate to blow it after investing this much time and money getting this far.

MAKE SURE they take you off training pay. They seem to have a fairly good inability to pay you the regular pay you are supposed to get.

Its not taht bad at all, just think of it as another time with your trainer from the OC. Do the regular pre trip stuff...in cab pretrip as well. Its just another day of driving. Schneider does not expect perfection...but that you can safely drive the truck and get out of situations. Ie...if you lose a gear, can you get back in it within 100 feet?

Downshifting...don't worry about that. They train you to bump and run while downshifting. However, on the road, they are training you to just simply coast to a stop. With your training, you know how to bump and run if you need to get into a gear, but if you are getting off an interstate, no need to 'waste fuel' by downshifting every gear.

hmm...basically think of it as another one of your final drives that you took at the OC. If you struggle or bomb it...they will let you take it again.

Thanks for the advice. It does lessen the anxiety knowing that you can try it again if you blow it on the first try. I was under the impression that it was one strike and your out

Just survive the training and sqt, you can retake it again, no problems. It changes after training. . .

    Hi,

I am in the same boat in Dallas for Monday. My TE time was with a Family Dollar account. What a time in hell that was. I sure hope over the road isn't as much heat and work. Sometimes my gears turn into a disaster area when down shifting too. I am just ready to get people out of my passenger seat. I think I will actually drive better when I know somebody isn't watching what I am doing. The bad side of getting training over is that when you have something go wrong you can't look over there and get information, unless you see somebody in that seat that isn't really there! Then you have more problems than finding the drop/pickup point.

Passenger seat drivers make me make mistakes driving in a car as well as truck.

Yea, makes me anxious too. don't worry soon you'll be on your own.
I have my 1 month check up, called safety check, I think an instructor watches me on a load, can't wait for that to be over. . .

Just got back from Ontario, now in indianapolis, sure am seeing the country :)

Yeah I failed the CDL test today. Failure to yield. What it was, was I didn't begin the slow before the yield far enough. That failed me. I take it again Friday. Tomorrow I drive some more for practice. Then Monday I will take SQT. That should be it for me. If I fail the CDL again, I will stop this trucking idea and try college again. I mean if I can't get it then I don't need it bad enough. I wasted 3 years in college anyway, so it is possible to get back to school. I would still need about 84 hours of college before I can get a degree.
