Anyone know what types of owner operator/lease operator opportunities might be available at LTL companies such as Reddaway, Conway, Estes, etc? I'm familiar with OTR and opportunities there but don't know much about LTL. The reason I ask is that I'm considering a P&D job with an LTL company and down the road want to work for myself (in LTL if possible). Thanks for your help.

I can tell you all about central transport...(wondering if i should wait for a confirmation before continuing!!) LOL

I have 5 friends O/O's who leased onto central..2 came from swift (paid for trucks), the other 3 were company drivers who saved up 5k to get a truck from Arrow truck in Phoenix..I was with them for every step of thier journeys, as I plan to take same path...

They all take home basically double what they did as a company driver (after fuel, ins, and truck pmt)..All my 1k a week boys now have 1900 to 2100 dollars in pocket every week, central paying for everything cept tractor ins and truck pmt (1400 a month)..

All of them happy...They get to skip and miss out on safety/production rallies...dock work...stupid company stuff..they roll in hook and book, they have thier own special dispatch, usually smartphone text/email system

WHen one guy cracked a block, he easily hopped back into a company rig so he could save up more money, lol

Seemed easy there...nice job if your equipment holds up, and or you have funds on back up for a big repair

Seemed cool ! and this at the worst ltl'r there is...I assume it would be better at every other carrier?

    Thank you for your reply.

Did your O/O friends run line haul terminal to terminal or did they assist in local pickup and delivery, or both?

All line haulers...the no stress night runs for 4 of them, one on a day run, 5 hours each way

If they did offer to p/d, i dont think anyone would go for it at that company...the p/d there is horrific at all levels

Couple guys run terminal to terminal, couple run to a meet spot and swap trailers then return..Im in Tucson, guys run to El Paso, or Blythe from here

Its cool man..I cant wait to get a truck and do something very similar..These guys have the least amount of bs, they leave and go home usually at the same time everyday..a normal life?....L/O LTL is definately for me, not too much, not too little

I preferred the meet (relay) driver as he picks up a scaled and rolling trailer...picking up from terminal in the middle of the night who knows what you'll get/// doors that wont close, 96k on axle, lights flickerin, stuck crank handle, one tandem pin wont move, lol.....

I'm not at all sure that doing local P&D work in your own truck would be a good idea. You really do wear the hell out of the truck, plus all the physical work. Not saying that a person couldn't make it, but seems to me like it would be tough.

Im with you Big Don I have a sciatic nerve problem from wearing a 20ish lb gun belt constantly getting in and out of a car for 20 years. I would rather just secure a van load if needed, open my trailer doors, slide tandems to the rear dock and wait and adjusting tandems while waiting to be loaded & unloaded. Esp. now that our detention pay is $20 an hour after 2 which is a lot. That being said if a shuttle job came open I will jump on that....lol

Not a well paying profession and most that have retired have nerve or back issues usually. Luckily I have no hip issues though. How much time on the job did he get in? I jumped on retirement the day I was eligible.
