Hey everyone. I just have a few questions. I'm a 21 year old female with a 2 year old son. I've been working in logistics since I was 14. My father, brother, uncles, and cousin's are all truck drivers/owner operators/and fleet managers. I've been in love with trucks since I was 7. I love the industry. I currently work for a Ocean Carrier, NYK Line, I work in Ocean Export, It's a great job and pays well. However, I'm not happy. I hate being stuck inside and behind a desk. My Father/Brother don't really support me in wanting to be a driver just because I'm a female and alot of things can happen. But I want to do it, I've learned young that life is short and you gotta do what you want before it's too late. So I'm looking at going to a school to get my cdl, I know alot of stuff from being with my dad on the truck, but I don't know enough to pass the state test. I'm just curious if you have any tips on what schools are good or not. I know from expierence CR Englad is not a wise choice. I want to get on the road and get going soon. The only thing is I know that alot of companies have a rider policies but the kids have to be 10 or older. I do have the option of my Mother keeping my son for me, but I have a hard time leaving him. I just want to do this and be able to make our lives better and enjoy my job. Anyway enough of me rambling.... let me know if you have any suggestions..... thanks so much! :biggrin_255:

You have plenty of time to get into trucking. With a 2 yr old, I wouldn't recommend it. You should be able to spend as much time as possible with your child IMO. If you're making good money where you're at, even if it's not what you think makes you happy, you have a child to think of now.

Should you decide you must get into trucking now, I would recommend SAGE for schooling.

I appreciate all of your advice, I know the kid needs me, but the kid needs diapers and food too. So I'll do what I gotta do to make his life better, maybe I'll just drive local I know our construction crews out here get paid alot, and and that'll get me some kind of expierence.... anyway thanks so much. stay safe. stay blessed.

    Candice,

In general, I agree with RubberGears... and I appreciate the fact that he didn't get up in your face about it as some others who post here would have.

We may disagree with it, but only you can make the choice.

Personally, also, I recommend SAGE - it's the school I attended. Trying to keep my bias at bay, I'd say *any* school with a PTDI certification. Do NOT spend more than .. oh, $5000 for the school. (you can read about my own experiences over in the schools forums, thread about SAGE in Henderson, CO)

While carrier based schools are out there (and the best reputation is apparently owned by Schnieder), I think you are right to seek out a 3rd party school.

I don't know if WIA will apply to you - you'd have to ask at the unemployment office. Check with them. They'll also know of any other programs that might help financially.

Personally, I think you would be better served working locally. Getting home daily will stand you in good stead - you'll get experience at the wheel, get paid, and get to change diap... um... be with yer goober every day.

You'll never get rich driving - but you obviously know that. As long as you make enough to pay the bills, and set a little aside - what else do you need? :)

Good luck - and absolutely, if you have a question or problem your family can't help you with, there's any number of us on here who would be willing to offer free advice. :)

I too come from a long line of truckers. I just started out, got 4 kids at home, youngest is 8 months. After each kid I would say when they get a little older, I am going to start driving trucks, but after the fourth I figured I would be about 97 before all the kids grew up, so I dived right in. As far as school I went to Roadmaster in San Antonio. More expensive than SAGE and got the same liscense, so whatever you can afford would be the best choice. Been out here for 3 weeks now and add that to the 3 weeks in school, haven't seen my kids in a while(couple days after school was out). Good luck, and I am sure you will make the best decision for your family.
