First off, I would like to thank all of you for the wealth of information you've posted over time. I just found this site recently, and have learned so much. For one, I never knew how wonderful a driving job at Walmart was regarded among the elite drivers. I'm not in the trucking profession - yet. I have a cozy office job in finance making $60k. But there's a lot of stress involved, and among other reasons, I'm considering a career move.
I was willing to consider going to CDL school and apply at several companies, *IF* I could land a job paying close to what I'm making. I have no family and live alone, so being gone 2, 3, or maybe even 4 weeks at a time wouldn't be a problem (I don't think). So I was looking at Crete, and think I meet their entry requirements, but I'm not sure how long it would take me to get back to my current salary level. I know about the 30-month driving requirement Walmart has, and if I thought I had a chance of getting on with them after I "pay my dues" for 30 months, it would make my decision a lot easier. I could definitely live on the $82k mentioned as their 1st year pay. Basically I'm trying to decide if I could get hired at Walmart after meeting the 30-month requirement. If so, I'll probably make the move. If not, I'm going to have to do more research.
Finally, I will get to the crux of this message. And, please save all the invectives; I've heard them all before. Everything on my driving record is clean, I have a stable work history, and no drug/alcohol problems. But, I spent 5 1/2 years in federal prison for downloading child porn on the computer. The felony conviction was in 2005, and I'm not on any kind of probation or supervision. However, I do have to register as a sex offender. Do you think Walmart would hire me assuming all other requirements are satisfactory? Do you think other companies (Crete) would hire me? I don't want to quit a job that I would consider a blessing (for someone in my position), pay several thousand dollars for CDL school, and then find out my criminal history would relegate me to driving for .25cpm somewhere. Any help would be appreciated, and congratulations to all you guys (and gals) who've landed what seems to be a dream job!
