right now, i have a free year's worth of anti virus, came with the package of programs installed. it is McAfee, which i may keep when it expires. i did have a freebie anti virus from Avast! which worked just fine, thing though about anti virus programs, they are not all alike, and none of them actually detect all the viruses out there.
so i'll wait and see what my plans are at expiration time.

I used to use Avast. Had a bug that marched right through it and destroyed my lap top. That's why I've got this big high speed desk top now, so maybe they did me a favor. . .
FWIW, my wife got an email from her corporate IT office today, warning about being too quick to install Windows 10. It is absolutely prohibited on the company machines of course, but this was talking about the average home computer. The guy who sent this out is no dummy. He's been their head of IT for over 20 years, and it's a BIG corporation.
Anyway, he was strongly recommending that nobody jump right into Windows 10 too quickly.
HE WAS ALSO WARNING ABOUT SCAMS SURROUNDING WINDOWS 10. Apparently there are several going around, from the phone calls wanting your credit card number to "sell" you Windows 10, to scams through email that if you click on the attachment, they put one of the Ransom Virus versions on your computer.
I'm not going to quote the email here, though as I don't want to get anybody, (my wife,) in trouble. -
i have read all the things about 10, my pc is compatible.
I personally liked Avast!
but i also use Maleware Bytes, to check for trojans, malware, spyware.
i have to run each one separately of course. one will find something, another will not.
i refuse to use any Norton program, as that is a HUGE resource hog as well.
many times, i have to search the web sites for removal tools for some things, once found. i am not a novice pc user, but no expert either.
been at this game myself now since my first pc back in 1998
learnt a lot over the years.Big Don and bullhaulerswife Thank this. -
I've been around the block a time or two myself, but I still have a lot of questions.
Would you let us know how your Windows 10 works out? -
i'll never forget my first pc, a Compaq, bought it brand new, got it home, opened it up, and started modifying it. all from watching a tv show back then, called "The Screen Savers" -
My son and I went half's on one in 1987. In other words, I bought it, and he put it together and was mostly the one to use it, for high school. It was an "Apple Compatible," off brand of some kind of another. I used the word processor on it occasionally. No such thing as WWW back then, at least that made it's way to little Lone Pine, CA.
First one that I really got into, was furnished by the S.O. for reports.
No windows. But it did have Word Perfect in DOS... -
Got this new Surface, and the upgrade to 10 came with the purchase...had the formerly known as teenager do the upgrade....he whizzed through it in minutes....seems OK so far.
