C-15 Cracked Head

    Ask about an upgraded casting. Cat had problems with cracking and they would offer an "upgrade", which was a newer design reman, but most of the time they weren't available reman so you got a new one for the reman price and no core charge. If you just buy a reman, you'll get stiffed on the core since it's cracked. May not apply to your engine, but worth asking about.

    You can have the head pressure tested. I would buy a head with the upgrade to new casting. For a couple of years, all reman heads were a new casting, but not any more. $500.00 to upgrade to new casting. If you do not get the upgrade to new casting, you might get somebody else's piece of crap with the injector seats all warped out of alignment.

    I been working for a company in South Africa who's fleet had about 12 Cat C15 and all of those vehicle heads cracked on about 700 000 km why does the head cracked. for what reason will it be doing that and you cannot refit it like that the water pipes will start blowing what can be the cause of the heads, does the fan start to late is it something to do with the temp. here is it driver negligence I would like to know cause al the cat owners in SA has replaced a head on a Cat C15 some of them 2 already

    Sometimes.............. it can just come down to how the metal was cast. There is grain in metal (crystalline structure & grain boundries). The hot and cold cycles of a cylinder head can induce cracking if the grain is not of the right pattern in critical areas of stress........like thin areas between valves.

    The manufacturer could have been doing every thing right as far as the machining goes, but I often wonder if the manufacturers pay enough attention to this area some times.

    If you do a search, the results come back in order of relevance I do believe. So, your first results could be from any time. Not sure if that is what happened, but understandable if it was.

    I don't think so, I have never searched this site. I think I know what happened though, I think I was in a newer thread and someone posted a link to reference this old one and I followed it and got suckered in, not paying attention to the dates.

    You'd be lucky to pull one of them heads off and not have a crack in the relief cut. If the head gasket was blown i can almost gaurentee that the block will need cut on that cylinder. If you don't pull the liner and at least check you will be running into this problem often cause it will keep doing it
