I have been waiting until I got everything right on my truck before tuning. I am still waiting, good thing rebel is not waiting by his phone for my call. it's 1 thing after another. all small stuff. I don't see how a oil leak would affect a tune. or vise versa

I don't think there's a direct comparable, because all the Garrett ones are wastegated. Whatever came on the older 14.0Lnon-egr is probably the closest comparable.
If top end power isn't a concern I would suggest trying the 171701. I've been meaning to try it for a while. I'll wise you guys up to some turbocharger theory here:
Exhaust side:
Inducer is the larger part of the wheel, exducer is the smaller part. (in = in, ex = out)
Borg warners use 88mm exducer /96mm inducer turbines on the 171701 and 171702 turbos. They come with a 1.32 a/r which is pretty standard for our applications. Larger number means more flow but more lag. Lower numbers are usually for gas engines, and 1.32 range for large diesels.
On the cold air side the inducer and exducer is opposite, that is the smaller number is the inducer and larger number is the exducer. The cold side has more to do with lag than the hot side, believe it or not. For the borg warners:
171701 - 100mm exducer, 71 mm inducer
171702 - 100mm exducer, 75 mm inducer
the 75mm inducer of the 02 means it can grab more air per RPM and push more into the engine. But the larger spread and smaller inducer on the 01 means it will spool quicker. My Volvo D12 had a cold side of something like 62/94. It was a Garrett turbo. That thing spooled VERY fast, but choked out quickly.
Personally I think the 01 turbo is under used on the detroits, especially the 11.1s. It's possible you will get more MPG with the 01, and definitely less lag. It will also be more efficient at low boost levels. But it will top out quickly, and if you're pushing lots of fuel your EGTs will rise fast. The Veteran, bbechtel16, heavyhaulerss and 2 others Thank this. -
Alan, you are a credit to our profession! -
The original garrett that came factory on my 550hp 14L ddec4 had a 78 mm compresor, actually bigger then the 171702.
But the exaust side was considerably smaller. 1.28 A/R waste gated housing with an exaust wheel that was 92mm.
It's the exaust side on the borg turbo that makes the 12.7 lag a bit. The smaller cubes of the 12.7 don't help.
It's not bad at all on a 14L thou.
It made it breath alot better.areelius Thanks this. -
Areelius , if your 12.7 is sitting at 500 rwhp and your not planning on going higher, I think you would be better off with the 171701 for sure.
Your still going to get the high flow turbine, but spool little faster and still have plenty of air for your hp level.
Rebel feels the 171702 is maxed out at 650 rwhp.
Gives you an idea . -

I've also always wondered about ball bearing turbos if they'd be good for our application.
bbechtel16 Thanks this.
