What does the term "veteran friendly" mean related to trucking? I've heard it used a lot, but I don't think its been defined in any certain terms.

..... It means if you're a veteran driver they won't be friendly towards you
.... They need inexperienced drivers to suck the life out of and feed on
    .....welcome to trucking

I don't understand why anyone would lease a truck from a trucking company. If you want a truck, save your money and buy one. Lease to own means you make the payments and maintenance for the trucking company, then when the truck is worn out, they sell it to you because they can no longer make a profit running it.

You meant to say experienced driver, a veteran is a person that served in the military.

That brings me back to my original question. What does veteran,(someone who has served in the military) friendly mean, in concrete terms?

Here are some generic definitions, but mostly it's a catch phrase. I think that the vagueness of Veteran Friendly makes people think they will get preferential treatment the entire time of their employment.

    Veteran Friendly Trucking Companies
Many trucking companies are veteran friendly. In fact, they often prefer veterans because they have a history of working hard and being disciplined on a daily basis. These attributes translate very well to the workplace. Trucking companies want workers who enjoy their jobs and want to make a difference, and veterans often fit the bill.

    Characteristics
The characteristics of a veteran friendly trucking company typically include a willingness to abide by the funding options provided by the Post 9/11 GI Bill. It’s also a willingness to accept drivers who drove trucks in the military and are skipping training to get their CDL license.

First post. I started with PTL in June with a friend and we L/P from Cure. Miles are good but maybe because we team. 5500-6000 a week so far. My complaints are:

    1. Pay.
What they don't tell you is when you first start you don't get paid the following week. It takes 2 weeks before you see your 1st paycheck. So you'll always get paid the week you work the following week.
Next is home time/off duty time. If you take a week off thinking you're still gonna get a check on payday....wrong. They hold your pay until you return. Recently had 2 weeks off (personal and truck in shop). They will not pay me for 2 weeks so I'm working now for 2 weeks with no pay. Now my paychecks are 2 weeks behind.
    2. Structure
    This company is so unorganized.

    Find another company

"Veteran Friendly" means they have submitted a form to the federal government that says they "appreciate and actively hire veterans", and in return they get some preferred consideration when bidding on a handful of federal contracts, as well as a gold star next to their name. That's generally all it means. Nothing more, nothing less.

Exactly right. We don't use owner operators but we had a couple of drivers who wanted to lease their trucks from us instead of being company drivers. We sat down and showed them on paper why it wouldn't be a good deal for them. It was a real eye opener for the drivers. When they saw, in black white, what it really takes to run a truck they decided to keep on being company drivers.
Lease purchase deals are usually a scam. A legal scam but a scam anyway. I agree with you, buy your own truck from someone other than the company if you think you want to be an OO.
