How long have you been retired and not working? Trucking companies frown on people who don't have perfect employment records with no unemployment gaps. If you have been retired for a while they probably won't hire you because they want people with perfect employment records with no periods of unemployment.

Ever consider driving a school bus? If your fed up with kids I can guarantee you dont want to deal with "mature" adults driving cars! I have an old friend who went from teaching to hauling kids around in the school bus and he seems pretty content! Of course if we werent friends he might have become a truck driver?!

Retirement doesn't count as unemployment because you have income every month.

LMAO!!! What trucking companies? If the OP goes trucking then it will be CDL school, then actually a chance for some local jobs!
IF he was an established CDL driver then he would just fill out the mandatory application without leaving any gaps, and sometimes he would even be asked to not leave any gaps! My beginning and leaving dates have always matched up at the 15th and 16th of the month, and nobody has ever raised an eyebrow.

@Matthew Caposino If the military doesnt want you, then the Transportation industry will surely take you!

Knowing nothing more about you than what you posted, it's impossible to answer your question. (How's your health? Do you have a Significant Other who would be impacted by your decision to drive? Have you looked into truck driving enough to know that it's more than wanting to drive? Have you read any books about it? Looked at truckers' blogs or YouTube clips? What have you learned? What do you think the OTR job/lifestyle is all about? What are you looking for in terms of income, home time, and benefits? Do you want local work (home very night) or do you want to stay out for weeks? Do you hope to drive team or solo? Do you like being alone? Are you mechanically inclined or at least curious? Would you take the responsibility of driving a big rig seriously?) Anyone
--not just you Matthew--who contemplates driving big rigs needs to answer these questions before plunging ahead to acquire a CDL.

Gaps in employment are looked at to see what you were doing. Not just to see if you were working. There are many folks who drive for a year, and go back to traveling. I had gaps where they asked me what was going on........I said golfing/fishing.....I earned it. No problems.
