I'm trying to rebuild mine, but i am doing something wrong. There is a spring there but it doesnt do anything. Should something go into the groove in metal shaft?

there is two kinds the one's with the aluminum rails and the ones that are built in the fairing in both cases there is a snap ring that goes in the grove on the pin to move the spring up and then the spring helps you close them down or holds them down i should say. so there is a snap ring in the grove you are talking about and it's a bit of a b itch to put in.
