Hello All,
Tomorrow is the day I start this journey that I've wanted to do for a long time now. I start CDL school at Peak Institute in Maryville, TN. This is a 3 week course and then it'll be off to which ever trucking company I chose.
I plan on writing updates everyday. There is some good information on here and some helpful people however, a lot of the information on here is several years old so I want to keep this updated for the ones thinking about joining this industry.
Background:
I just turned 29 in July. I will be divorced officially this Friday. The biggest hurdle in my mind was my kids. Im going to take a beating for this from a lot of you guys but I've made my mind up and its what I am doing. I served 7 and half years in the Army with one tour to Iraq so I think I will be just fine being away from home. My grandfather trucked for over 30 years. I couldn't wait for the summers to get here so I could ride with him on his truck. Im really looking forward to this. Its all thats on my mind constantly. I left a great paying job to go to school and then onto drive. However, the job was ending very soon anyways so I just got ahead of the game.
Tomorrow is the day...

Ive seen the numerous post about having kids and driving a truck, to me its no different than being deployed or gone for training. Yes sometimes you do need a break.

Take a beating for what because you're leaving your kids home?I assume you're soon to be exwife has custody of them doesn't she?How many kids do you have and how old are they? You'll be getting home often and I would suggest calling them daily. This school you'll be attending, will you be staying there the 3 weeks or go home everyday?Alot of fathers are driving trk the main thing is make sure your kids are well aware you haven't forgot them.I would suggest buying them toys and soveniers while on the road.If you and ex wife get along buy her something as well.BeanDip and Sneakerfix Thank this.

I actually have joint custody of them but we get along great so she knows the situation. Nothing is changing in that sense. We aren't like a lot of ex's we get along and we don't use the kids against each other. Yes i talk to them everyday and sometimes even facetime which is what I plan on doing when Im gone. Thanks for all the encouragement guys and gals. Also I will be going home every night.
pattyj Thanks this. -
Spend as much time as you can with your kids till you finally go with a company.Wcampbell86 and Sneakerfix Thank this.
