    It's an option in the app to have traffic turned on or off (to save data consumption if it's not needed).

    Very simple. The colors are related to current GPS speeds being seen, compared to speed limits set on the road.
    green = good, typical speeds
    yellow = slower then normal traffic flow, keep an eye on it
    red = very slow and/or stop-go traffic flow, needs looking into more if it's in front of you
    black = no traffic flow

    It updates surprisingly fast and is not reliant upon "driver reports"

    I had a driver tell me last week that Google maps traffic was not real-time, and wasn't accurate. He was adamant and insistent, and wanted to fight about it. I bid him a good day. :|

    You can't tell some people anything. But they believe "trucker road reports" about the weather and road conditions 200 miles away :biggrin_25523:

    Android phone.

    I use it alongside my Rand McNally truck GPS and atlas. Google maps is meant for cars, but RM's truck gps is out of date even with the latest maps. So I compare the two and decide when & where to deviate from RM.

    In this case, the detour was onto old highway 66 so I knew it would be truckable.

    It is pretty amazing. My understanding is that it relies on data received from everyone using an android phone. In one case a year or so ago I saw a huge dustcloud maybe 5 miles down the road. By the time I got to the accident (a travel trailer rolled into the median) maybe 5 minutes later google was already showing yellow and red...

    Why do you think Google searches are free? Remember back in the 90s when you had yahoo, excite, ask jeeves, dogpile, etc? They all were crowded screens litered with ads. Meanwhile google had a simple search bar.

    They all sold ads, but google search result ads were much more closely related to what you were searching for. So they got more clicks...

    Then google offered gmail, with way way more web storage than anyone else. Why? So their algorithms could scan your emails to see what you were interested in. Instead of blasting everybody with an ad for viagra, some got advertisements for Nascar and others the symphony.

    Ad dollars spent with google translated into more sales so Google could charge more for ads and go on offering loss leaders like android phones and chromebook computers for pennies on the dollar all in exchange for learning your habits.


    It certainly has the potential to be scary, but also the potential for a lot of good. Google searches have been used to predict things like flu outbreaks.

    HAHA, yeah and they sit there asking questions but never take there thumb off the mic button, lol. I love google maps, I used to use the navstar and google maps just so I could listen to them argue, lol.

    Yes it is, but it's that way and it's not going anywhere wether you utilize it or not, so I utilize the hell out of it. I don't route with Google, I only check traffic status periodically and before critical deviation points around common bad areas where there are reasonable alternates if the backup is bad enough.

    The technology gathers data from both IPhone and Android cellular devices that are turned on and have GPS radio turned on (location services)
