I am looking at a 2004 Volvo with a d12 in it. The seller has now told me that there is a cluster issue with the truck. I guess the truck starts every time but sometimes the gauges work fine and other times it takes them a while to start up. Also the signal lights, wipers, and cab fan don't work when the gauges aren't working. What could be the issue here? Is it an easy fix or am I wasting my time looking at the truck? The truck is set up as an RV Toter that is why I am so interested in it. The price is pretty good but the guy is not wanting to move much on it and doesn't want to fix the issue.

Tell him to wiggle for the equipment malfunction or kick rocks. Dash wiring is a nuisance
-
its possible its a ignition switch issue that's what it sounds like or a realay since there is more than one component not operating

The cluster failing is a common problem, but if there's other components that are inoperable at the same time as the cluster, it's usually a power or grounding problem. Check the main power and ground cables connected to the bulkhead passthrough (just under and to the right of the foot valve). It's more common for them to loosen up internally than externally, so if they're tight outside, pull the lower left dash cover where the diagnostic connector is and check the same power and ground that are on the inside of the cab. There's other small ground wires around the throttle pedal to check, or there may be an issue with one of the power relays as well. They're up in the fuse panel above the radio.

This question is for M&KMIKE,
I have an 03 VN where the only gauges that arbitrarily go on and off through out the day are the oil pressure gauge and the temp gauge. The rest of the gauges on the cluster have no problems what so ever. Any idea what could be causing this? I'd assume if the cluster itself was bad then all the gauges would be cutting in and out but these 2 are the only ones having an intermittent issue. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
Tim -
I do have a pic of the dash cluster if that's helpful.

One thing you can do is a cluster self test, where it sweeps the gauges. It's under the diagnostics menu on the display. If the issue is intermittent, and only with the oil pressure and temp, it may or may not be the cluster. What about the RPM's? I'd say you may have an issue with communication to the engine ecu, but usually you'll lose the tach as well.
Try that self test. Something intermittent like that, the easiest thing for us to do at the dealer is to install a test cluster and drive it. Intermittent problems are the hardest ones to find sometimes.
