An army buddy of mine that got out a little after I did went to Maverick. They take pretty good care of their drivers. I don't like them because they run autos which can mess you up applying for new jobs since most of the industry is standards. When I interviewed for the oil field one of the big questions was did my last company run an auto trans. Had my answer been yes then I wouldn't have got the job!

I'd love to drive for Maverick but I'm outside their hiring area. Best of luck Double07.

    DoubleO7 and machinegunner_240 Thank this.

Thank You. Even though I have been off the road 11 years, my first experience taught me the good, bad, and ugly of trucking. Brand new drivers have to experience it to understand it. The most important thing is to get accident free experience so if a guy wants, there will be better opportunities to pursue. I am really looking forward to getting out there again.

Who knows, I may have a really good experience with Swift.

When you get a CDL how long do you have to get a job before they start turning you away to get a refresher course?

Well, I Got my CDL in 2003, and have kept it. I got off the road in 2004. A lot of the companies I have talked to said I would have to do a 160hr. refresher course to be considered.

    Lightside Thanks this.

I was with them in 2004. things may have changed since then. One of the great things I experienced there was that I was NEVER lied to.

Different companies have different requirements. Will have to ask them.

I got a friend who drove for them as recently as last year. He went to Mav straight out of CDL school. They were good to him. He was home most weekends and averaged $1,200 a week

Western is forced dispatch. You have zero choice about refusing the load. Case in point. I had 1 hour 45 mins left on my clock for the week (this is before elogs). Dispatch told me to drive from a furniture whare house in Ledyard Connecticut to Woodbury NY. Dispatch said it was a mere 107 miles, and I should be able to get there in less than two hours. Well not quite. Trucks are goverend at 62 max. Going up hills you are lucky if that asthmatic truck can do 50 with a 10 speed. It took me 3 hours.

Western is a little bit better than Swift, but not by much. I would go elsewhere myself.
