Working any other job, an honest mistake isn't going to send you to jail. Stealing from the cash register is an active decision. Viewing porn in your cubicle is as well. If you're driving down the road and glance at your notebook to check the exit # you're looking for as a car cuts you off and mashes the brakes to take that exit they almost missed because they HAD to get around you...all your employer will see in the short little clip (whether you hit the ####### or not...hard brake triggered the cam) is you "distracted" behind the wheel.
200 driving decisions/mile (OSHA stat, I linked to it in the other thread)...means in a 2500 mile week you made 500,000 decisions. Even at 99.999% nearly perfect driving, there's still 5 decisions/week that can get you fired. "For cause - unsafe driving" means no unemployment, and good luck getting another job. Nobody will see the 499,995 correct decisions/week...but the 5 bad ones are on video, so you can't argue with what got put on your DAC. Sorry 'bout your luck.

Not sure about the legalities of a camera pointed inside in cab. I know for a fact they can't put one in the sleeper berth. But if they can put one watching the driver...then why won't they place one on the dash...Watching for anything that might take the liability off the company in case of an accident?
But it's not the thing to do. The companies are hiring steering wheel holders and punks. (They admit that fact) Their reason for it is there is no one else to do it.
They know these people come in...stay less than 6 months usually and leave...excuse is they can't make any money.
Facts: Trucking companies for the most part pay the same way. If you didn't make any money at the last 2 or 3 companies you've been with...you may need to look in the mirrow.
That being said...it's what this industry has become...so to protect their self, (from the very people they hire) they feel compelled to watch them 24/7
So there goes the freedom of the open road.
And young people think times are better now than before...hmmm...they're wrong again...enjoy your fame. You're now on candid cameraKetchikan baby and Paul Geanta Thank this. -
The truck belongs to the company. Not you. You still have the freedom of the open road. Many have mentioned that the camera's are only used in the event of a; sudden acceleration, going on a turn too tight, or a hard braking event.
The camera's are not in the sleeper berth, and why would they be?
I have a good suspicion that the driver facing cameras are a way for Swift to reduce liability and to reduce their insurance rates on each truck. -

Again...if the company (s) hadn't hired people who they feel they HAVE to watch...what would the need for cameras be. See...like I said...the company hires these people and are suppose to be able to trust them. If they cant...fire them. (And your reply is...?)
I'll make it real easy...I've been out here since August 1978. I know...I've watched what has happened to a once honorable profession. And unless you've seen it over the years...you can only read about it...I know...stormy379 Thanks this. -
If I was going to drive for someone else. There's no way I'd ever drive for a company that had driver facing cameras. I mean how would I be able to hit my pipe if they've got a camera looking at me all the time. Lol. Just a joke guys.

With rampant turnover, you have a workforce with a propensity to 'just not give a sht' about anyone or anything. You can tell drivers what to do , over and over, in orientation, and they won't listen, they will not respect your policies and they well, frankly just don't give a sht.
in 1978, people were loyal, and actually gave a sht and had loyalty and respect for the profession. Today its a clusterF of a joke...
Today, you have companies that are always ripping the driver off, in any way they can. Swift, celadon, JBH
We also live in a very litigatious Society. Swift was just sued by an O/O for a drivers foot being crushed by a student while sliding tandems.

And driver pay has continued to stay the same, while the folks in the executive suite give themselves raises.
you get what you pay for.Last edited: Aug 26, 2015

i don't think this is an accurate comparison .
Employees in a shop or office would be video'd as a group, from a distance. Now if they had a camera strapped to their head that pointed at their face all day long and recorded everything they said, now that would be an accurate comparison.
If Wally world or mcd's tried that crap, how many of their employees would tell them to go $&@# themselves? I would bet a lot more of them would vs. drivers.
As for the boss around the corner scenario, it's not recorded. Plus he's not looking right at your face without you knowing it.
However, everyone does have a price. Somewhere between $1.00/week and 1billion dollars a week, at some point we'd all say yes.BOB42025 Thanks this. -

You have missed the Webcam Laptops? Many office sales reps are being recorded from a camera pointed right in their faces and recording their conversations all day long.
