Some place in your new hire paperwork will be an agreement that you will give a certain amount of notice. Two weeks is standard. However, as others have said, there is a lot of reason not to give that much notice.
With the one trucking company that I quit from, I gave them 2 weeks written notice but then included a sentence that we have mutually agreed, as worked out verbally with my driver manager, to end my employment well before that date. I gave two weeks written notice, on file with the company but by mutual agreement, ended my employment 2 days later. -

Gave trans am my 2 week notice last week. I live in Georgia. I will never work for another company that dont have terminal in the South.

I live in Columbus Ga, but I'm always in Atlanta.
I have put in applications with Southern regional companies that have terminals in Atlanta area. I'm looking only at companies that get you home on weekends. -
I 've done it both ways over the yrs. 1 week notice and 1 min notice. However this was yrs ago. Most places claim to be "at will" and either side can end employment "at will" without notice. But if the co. has treated you fairly, then be courteous and give notice. But be prepared to keep running or getting the boot at a far away shop/drop lot. -
With me, it depends on how I was treated during my tenure with the company. If I was treated like garbage the whole time, and they made my life miserable...I don't even tell them, they will find out when they see the truck in the yard. If I was treated good, and had a good relationship with them, but was leaving for a better opportunity (or what is THOUGHT to be a better opportunity), I will gladly give 2 weeks.

I believe if a company has treated you good, you should give them a week or so notice. But be prepared for them to end your employment on the spot. Last job I left I scheduled my start date for the end of the weeks notice I was going to give. My new employer was flexible enough to allow me to start the next day should the company I was leaving decide to terminate my employment on the spot. Worked out pretty good. Only ended up with a day off between jobs.
