The infrared camera/scanner has been in use up here at the Leduc, AB, scale (just south of Edmonton--southbound) for about a half-dozen years. They also installed another cluster of cameras for other enforcement purposes about three years ago. I drove by the scale about a month and-a-half ago and they had the access road at the point the cameras were stationed all torn up, but I don't know if they were removing, installing or repairing and I haven't been by since.

I can't speak to any inspections related to the cameras because, despite several hundred trips southbound over the last six years, I have by-passed that scale whenever it was open.

I had one when I was running reefer, but I also used it for checking/verifying transmission, differential, wheel end and tire temperatures.

I also used it for evidence of what happened if they found my shrivelled up body. This was the temperature of the air coming out the dash vents when my air conditioning gave out in the Arizona summer.

right, it is also used to see if an injector is not function properly, by the temps at each exhaust port.

Fla as had the infrared brake check system in use for years now. Fla's weigh stations have lasers that measure your width, height and if any single piece of load is sticking out,.. it will tell the officer exactly where on the trailer its sticking up or out too far. They have all that info before you ever hit the arrow light to bypass or come over and get on the scale.

I read somewhere that Fla is wanting to set up the border patrol style check stations as well. Probably just for the southern region,.. should make traffic even more wonderful when traveling down there.

Drivers are not required to check push rod measurements.

your required to check your brakes as part of your PTI.that includes brake stroke.

i don't check brake stroke. i look at the brakes. it takes 2 people to check brake stroke. it only takes 1 person to look at brake grap between drums and shoes. gaps mean longer strokes. i don't like gaps in my brakes.

as a retired auto mechanic, i wouldn't let my customers out of the shop with loosely adjusted brakes. i keep my truck and trailers also adjusted.

as much as some of you HATE crawling on the ground. it only takes ONE cop to put you OOS for loose brakes and a bad CSA.

as for those infrared guns. harbor freight has them cheap. and they work just as good.
