It's a coloquial term for some Cajuns, mostly from LA, but also for some folk from Lower Alabama. Has no relation to the racial epithet "coon." It's actually kind of a badge of honor, depending on where you grew up (countywise) and your social class.

Iwas in the service with a proud coonass, which is why I even know about it.
