I run flatbed with a base in midwest and have being on my own for several years. I own equipment and have no difficulties to run everything on my own, paperwork, load search etc. I can make preaty much enough for living and bills. Every month I book several loads with Landstar and I am OK with a $2 an avarage per mile. Good friend of mine joined Landstar two months ago. He is pulling dry van out of CA , and is telling me that he is very satisfied with L/S and what he makes now.
My question is : If I lease on to Landstar will I be able to make more, get better paid loads without having to deal with a lot of deadheads ? Currently I can get something in a day or two to get out of any area. I am afraid how the situation will be if I rely only on Landstar !??
Will appreciate any advice, suggestion and experience.
Thank you.

You can gets loads off other load boards while leased to LS…..you just have to run them through an agency here at LS.

A number of years ago I leased to Landstar. I hauled loads for JB Hunt, Schneider and others during that time. Some of their agents use 3ppl's for at least some of their freight, if not all. Landstar has a lot of agents. I did well leasing to them. Although that has been a number of years ago, I think that I do better under my own authority. I have known some owner operators who have been with Landstar for a number of years and still seem to be doing well. Landstar did lose some owner operators when they went to elogs, so I understand. I don't see a great advantage of leasing to Landstar or any other carrier if you are successful running your own authority.

I never heard a man say a bad word about Mercer in 30 years...and I've talked to a LOT of them. All are happy for some reason. That's a testament to their company culture right there.

That's true about not being able to get loads from other brokers. Also, unless it's a broker who is already approved with LS the broker won't do the setup. Takes too long. They want the load moved now.
As far as making more, NO NO NO. I'm an independent and I have access to the BCO load board rates and the Landstar broker load board with rates. As an example. I just did a load for Landstar. I got $3,800. The Landstar carrier got $3,400. May have been $3,300, can't remember but an independent gets more then a Landstar driver.icsheeple, KenworthGuyNH and victorio Thank this.
