    ORIGINAL:

A diesel fuel tanker has overturned and caught fire on the off-ramp of the Glenn Highway, a Mat-Su Borough spokeswoman says.

The tanker can hold up to 6,000 gallons, although it's unclear how much fuel it was hauling at the time, said borough spokeswoman Patty Sullivan.

The crash also has ignited a small grass fire. Initial reports, from the deputy director of emergency services for the borough, indicate that the driver was not seriously injured, she said.

Smoke from the crash is visible from the state fair. Vehicles should avoid the Parks-Glenn highways interchange if possible.

NOTE: An earlier version of this story, based on information from the Mat-Su Borough, said the tank carried as much as 6,000 gallons of gasoline. Troopers say it carried up to 5,200 gallons of diesel fuel.

Wonder if this was an equipment malfunction, or if it was human error in the hook and pretrip.

I wonder the same. What makes this especially mystifying to me is that the tanks were almost certainly filled at the Port of Anchorage, 30 miles back; seems ample time to me for human error to play out, but the transitions on those two bridges are particularly rough.

Couple years ago I came across the aftermath of a wreck. Tandem dump truck lost its trailer (quad axle pup wagon) As I drove past, I could see the rear crossmember of the truck still hooked to the trailer's draw bar. I guess all the bolts holding the rear crossmember to the frame rails either fell out or sheared off.
