Two months more, that's nothing. Biggest thing doing tanker is the hoses. You have to realize instantly if your missing an O-ring.

Apparently Ted and Kathleen are on the same page. It's companies discretion and how needy they are.

Just going to give an update here. Fuel Delivery Services isn't a bad company. I think they probably just had some more competitive applications. If you didn't start your interview with a road test, then they weren't considering you at the last minute. I was turned away from my #1 choice for employment several times before getting an offer of employment; and I subsequently rejected that offer of employment, for a different company. You could always give them a try later.

I got hired at Fuel Delivery Services and know the people we are talking about in this thread. They are my bosses and coworkers. Look, I can't go into detail and I can't be revealing, but this company has looked out for me already, and I have a high amount of confidence in this place. The people referenced to, are not bad people. I am very happy here; and I am the most anti-employer, boss-hating person I know. I work on average 11 hours a day and our fleet is respected. I have an amazing work/home balance. The worst thing I've encountered at this job, are idiots smoking cigarettes in close proximity to me while unloading fuel at a service station. But for the most part, so far as I can tell, the company respects us...

What is a TWIC card? I googled it but I still don't understand why they are important.

Well, I googled a bit more, found this.

"If you access a port as part of your job, chances are you will need a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC), a biometric “smart” card that makes sure only trusted people have access to secure areas of the port."

So if you have to pick up loads or deliver loads to Ports, you need something like this to increase security?

I don't know how it works for people in the middle of the country but here the fuel tankers have many fill up locations at ports. Its the same background check as HAZMAT but you get a chipped card to get you past security.

Like the other guy said, just finish out your year and apply again. And once you're in the tanker club, you're in. You'll get fast call backs from just about everyone after you get some tank exp.

Some outfits only want 1 year of any driving, some want more, some want tank exp. Overall, most prefer some tank exp, esp for hazmat, but will bend. I recently saw an ad that required 5 years van OR 1 year (maybe 2 years?) tanker.

a TWIC card is a credential that allows automatic access to the Ports. In my case, we go to Port of Stockton every day and some of us go to the port in Benicia. A lot of these oil refineries are right at the Port because they import/export at sea as well.

^^and yeah, I second that notion about getting tanker experience. Anybody who wants a solid career in truck driving should get a hazmat endorsement and a tanker endorsement, and go get 6 months to 1 year experience pulling a tank vehicle. Before getting tank experience, I competed for work . Just 6 months tanker experience, allowed me to get my #1 choice of employment , the 1st time around.

I've been really busy lately, but it's working out pretty well. The training pay is a little low for me because we don't work 16 hours a day like at my last job. But once the training is finished up, I'll be really happy

For the most part I think every Co. has “rules” posted to knock down the riff raft without getting to deep into the hiring deal.

I do LP gas bulk & metered to farms here in NC & VA with a trailer, started end of June. Had my class B since 1983 only used it that summer but kept it up to date. December 2014 got my class A but with a medical restriction I had a hard time finding a class A job up north. Was able to drive a class B tank truck doing home heating oil for a few months then moved to NC.

This Co. I am with took me on with little trailer experience. Sent me with trainers doing liquid hot tar in trailers for a week or 2, then moved to end dump trailer for a few weeks doing rock & sand for concrete plants and then to the LP tank trailers with a trainer, more for hose hook up for loading and un-loading between bulk & metered. I have been on my own for a few weeks now, have my own truck and they are working on the metered trailer.

I have a TWIC and HAZMAT and all the other endorsements, clean MVDR, and a little older as I am sure all helped get the tanker jobs. I needed the TWIC for 1 load of tar at a port and also for the LP rack that is far from a port. I was told most if not all fuel racks will be looking for TWIC cards because of 911. I also needed the TWIC for the oil rack back up north.

Bottom line have all documents in place, a clean MVDR for when the “right time & place” comes together, it did for me.
